    Hi,

I have a fresh install of WordPress 4.5.2 with almost no content, a very lean child theme based on twentysixteen, and only a handful of plugins. I just installed WordFence today (https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wordfence/) and can not get a scan to complete. It always hangs while comparing WP core files.

I have read through several similar forum posts, tried several different settings of the “Maximum execution time for each scan stage” setting (eventually setting it back to 15), changed the max_execution_time to 120 in my php.ini (memory_limit is set to 128, btw, and WF’s memory test says that it benchmarks up to 80.25), disabled LiveTraffic, and haven’t found anything that works yet.

Hosting service is Dreamhost, and they say that their shared hosting uses Apache on Ubuntu.

I’m about ready to give up on this plugin, as I have already spent a lot more time than I can spare on this. Any other suggestions before I do?

    Thanks,
    -Mike D.

P.S. Here’s a snippet from the activity log:

  • Hi TheRealMikeD,

Have you tried disabling “Enable SSL Verification”? It is located at the bottom of the Wordfence Diagnostics Page.

    Let me know.

    Hi wflandon,

Thanks for the reply. Disabling “Enable SSL Verification” did not help.

I notice in the logs that the automatically scheduled scans seem to be completing successfully (in just a little over one minute). But no manual scans ever make it past the spot you see in my original post.

At the bottom of the Wordfence Diagnostics page, check “Enable debugging mode” and re-run the scan. Paste the last 20 lines or so in the thread. Make sure you remove any sensitive information! Then we will check it out and go from there.

OK, this seems to have yielded some clues. Here are the last couple of lines from the activity log, after enabling debug mode:

[May 25 10:43:43:1464198223.605228:4:info] Scan process ended after forking.
    [May 25 10:43:43:1464198223.604270:4:error] gzinflate(): data error (2) File: /home/{my user name}/{my domain name}/wp-includes/class-wp-http-encoding.php Line: 58

I got this same error message about gzinflate() (for the same file) four times (separated by many other lines in the log each time) before it finally gave up.

Does that give you any ideas?

    Thanks!

Upgraded to WF 6.1.8 this morning, and now the manual scans are working. Not sure what the problem was, but the newer release seems to have fixed it. Just for the record, here are the settings that I tried, and whether or not each one worked for me:

    • Enable Live Traffic View: works
    • All “Scans to include” options enabled (and working successfully like this), EXCEPT:
    • Scan public facing site for vulnerabilities?
    • Scan files outside your WordPress installation
    • Enable HIGH SENSITIVITY scanning.
    • How much memory should Wordfence request when scanning: 256
    • Maximum execution time for each scan stage: 15
    • Enable debugging mode (increases database load): works whether this is on or off
    • Enable SSL Verification: does not work

Thanks to wflandon for his assistance!

Thanks TheRealMikeD. And thanks for the info. That always helps us out.

Glad it’s working for you now!
