I had to deactivate Word Fence today as it caused a problem in WordPress admin when I create or edit posts. The admin dashboard on the left on my iPad disappears and is replaced by a bunch of small text characters. Unfortunately, there is no way to add a screenshot to this description. You really need to see this visually. I deactivated all plugins, then reactivated them one at a time, and narrowed the problem to Word Fence.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @todindiana thanks for your query.

This could be a case for the firewall’s learning mode as it does not accept one of the actions in the admin dashboard.

From the Wordfence Dashboard click on Manage WAF. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. Now perform the actions that were causing issues in the admin dashboard. This will help Wordfence learn that these actions are normal and it will allow them in the future. After you have finished performing the actions, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting. Now test to see if these actions work correctly.

https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/learning-mode/ is an amazing resource for learning more about the WAF and learning mode.

If this doesn’t have a positive effect, you could also please try loading the admin page while keeping a Browser Console open to see if you can detect any JavaScript errors or files that fail to load? If you see any red text in the console, please take a screenshot of it, upload to Snipboard and paste the link here. I will help interpret the errors with you.

Let me know how you get on!

    Peter.

I just re-activated WF and set the learning mode to start on 2020-1113. So, things are normal but I’ll try to remember to touch base in a week or so unless I encounter errors.

    Hi @todindiana,

I would not recommend keeping Learning Mode on semi-permanently in case it normalises an event that somebody else performs that genuinely should be blocked.

If Learning Mode hasn’t fixed the admin console view by allowing scripts or plugins behind the scenes to do their thing, set the WAF back to Enabled and Protecting and let me know so we can try some more potential fixes.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
