Hi Guys I realise this has been posted about numerous times and ive have read every single thread on it.

Im having a really hard time with this wordfence I had it installed on most of my websites and then one by one i realised failed to update notices. I ried to update and of course it wouldn’t. I then did a clean reinstall and got this message..

“Wordfence could not register with the Wordfence scanning servers when it activated. You can try to fix this by deactivating Wordfence and then activating it again, so Wordfence will retry registering for you. If you keep seeing this error, it usually means your WordPress…”

I followed instructions found on other threads and looked under the diagnostics tab to see if i had a connection to wordfence servers and saw this error :

    “Connecting to Wordfence servers (http)
wp_remote_post() test to noc1.wordfence.com failed! Response was: cURL error 28: Connection timed out after 10001 milliseconds
    Connecting to Wordfence servers (https)
wp_remote_post() test to noc1.wordfence.com failed! Response was: cURL error 28: Connection timed out after 10000 milliseconds”

I then went to my host to request they look at this connection issue and after over a week of heated exchange with them no results they said it was all fine on their side.

I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling with removal of databases.
Removing plugins, checked the ssl debug option.

Whats really strange to me is I have 19 sites with the same host on a shared server same ip cluster and only 3 of them are having this issue with wordfence while the others still work.

I cannot establish a pattern at all in terms of the ones that work and the ones that dont.

One is infact one of my latest websites and the other one of my oldest. When I compare the reports in diagnostics all is the same except for connection. A this stage my host in content that 16 out of the 19 sites are working and therefore they are not to blame.

I know you guys have seen this issue many times quite a while back is there anybody who can assist me to try figure this out. I really am not comfortable using another plugin as nothing compares to wordfence.

I also don’t want to move three websites to another host to find that that wasn’t the issue.

Im hoping that if somebody can help me solve one I can do the rest as they are all critical sites to me.

One last detail I also have websites hosted outside of my current host also some of whom are having a error.

    Best Regards Risen.

    Hi @risen281

When you said, “19 sites with the same host on a shared server same ip cluster – that says to me that an IP cluster means your sites are hosted under different IP addresses and are on different shared servers.

If that is the case then this could explain it if the servers are different.

Did you check the database as instructed?

“Wordfence could not register with the Wordfence scanning servers when it activated. You can try to fix this by deactivating Wordfence and then activating it again, so Wordfence will retry registering for you. If you keep seeing this error, it usually means your WordPress server can’t connect to our scanning servers, or your wfConfig database table cannot be created to save the key. You can try asking your host to allow your server to connect to noc1.wordfence.com or check the wfConfig database table and database privileges.”

The error is related to the cURL library on the hosting server or servers so this may still have to be investigated by your hosting provider if that is the cause.

Please ask them to make sure that they are not blocking outgoing connections to our IP address range 69.46.36.0 to 69.46.36.32

I would like to have a look at one Wordfence diagnostics report for one site that doesn’t have the cURL error 28 and another Wordfence diagnostics report for one site that does have the cURL error 28.

Please go to the top of the “Diagnostics” tab on the Wordfence “Tools” page. There will be a “SEND REPORT BY EMAIL” button to send the diagnostics reports. Enter wftest [at] wordfence [dot] com as the email and @risen281 as the forum username please.

Once you have emailed me both diagnostics reports can you reply here to let me know that they have been sent. This is important in the unlikely event that your installation of WordPress are having an issue with sending mail.

HI there WFPhil. Everything I have read on this topic is quite old and it seemed to die down ie was resolved with solution supplied here or at the host side. My host however is adamant its not them and to be honest i have a few sites not hosted with them that are doing the same thing.

I have sent you diagnostics mails from a broken site and one that is from a working site.

I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this issue especially when it seems everybody else had theirs sorted.

HI Phil.I know its saturday im a little OCD.Myself not being able to find a resolution is killing me. Just as a update.

I looked at my sites again and it actually seems to stem from one host only. % of their sites in total out of the 19 i have with them are doing this now. I have 24 other sites spread across other hosts and not one is giving me this this hassle

I completely removed and cleared out the wp installation and db installed a default wp site and tried wordfence and still it would not work.

I started looking into curl errors and played around with some luck with the timeout value and set it to 300sec.

I monitored outgoing connections and saw the key it was trying to use. I grabbed this key and tried to pop it into the main dash and verify and then i found something change I dont know how relevant. https://i.imgur.com/2i87dP7.jpg at one stage this was throwing out a curl 7 error…. im not sure what the difference is yet.

Is it possible that my ip is blocked by you guys? Dumb question I know.

My hosting providers after seeing all of this are still saying its not on their side. Quite frankly im really disappointed in their service regarding the issue instead of pointing a finger tell me what to ask how to find out more.

If you do get to runthrough the logs and find that it is the host I dont even know what to say to them about it anymore.

Hope you are having a better weekend than I am.lol
    Regards
    Juan

Hi Phil, I laid a huge complaint threatening to move of their services and got a phone call from I assume some senior and they found that the your ips were indeed being blocked from their side despite what had been said to me….. Everything iis working perfectly now.

Thanks for looking into this and thanks for a awesome plugin.

    Hi @risen281

Thank you for the update that it was a problem on the hosting server or servers and that this is now resolved.
