• I use a lot of categories. I find that specificity helps people find postings.

I started my blog last 10/29, and I’m up to close to 600 categories. But Category functionality is breaking down in WordPress. Not all categories are visible in the WRITE screen. If I add a new one, it attaches to the post, but if I re-edit the post, I often lose a new category or two.

Is there any other desirable method of bringing this kind of issue to the attention of the design team?

  • You just did.
Would tags not help you in lieu of categories? If you categorize every single book in a library, are you really helping potential readers, or just being specific to the point where the categories have become meaningless?

Not really – first I’d have to find the right category… and browsing 600 of them, would scare me off.

Why does there need to be a limit on category number built into the coding? Electrons are free.

I blog largely about current events and issues in the news. Having a “War on Terror” category with hundreds of posts in it is not helpful. I have to be specific, and I categorize typically under several headings.

Tags are not visible in the blog in the Theme I use. I’m running one Tag plugin. I tried another (forget the name) which wouldn’t run. I get a lot of traffic via Google, and they’re finding posts by the Category listings.

Every book in a library does have separate individual catalogue number.

So… the argument is to not fix your theme (user modifiable) to use and show tags; but instead to try and get someone else to modify the core product and wait for it to show up in a release cycle?

Is that an apt summary? If so, have a go at trac.www.ads-software.com or hit the codex for the mailing list addresses.

(would it help if I mentioned search engines spend most of the day crawling my tag links? Just about non-stop. ?? )

Not everyone is a knowlegeable enough web-page coder to modify a Theme to add such a functionality. I haven’t even been able to figure out how to fix my Theme’s link category system to get it to operate properly. And I have to tell you: I’m more technical than a lot of people.

Thank you for the trac.www.ads-software.com reference.

Is it proper behavior for interlopers like me to show up and write tickets?

Tons of info in the Codex about working with themes. If you need some help, just start a new thread with your question.

As for trac, I think this is the right article: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Submitting_Bugs

Thank you. I’d actually read that part of the codex a long time back, but forgot its existence.
