WordPress 3.0 Multisite on Bluehost?

I’m trying to get it to work with no luck so far. I’ve got it multi-sites enabled but when I try to go to my new website, nothing shows up.

Bluehost does not support wildcard subdomains. At all.

So, you need to pick subfolders. if you can’t, you’ll either have to wrangle the install or give up or use a different domain or install a new instance.

My site https://mercadder.com is on Bluehost and running WordPress multisites, using subdomains.

Follow the normal instructions and the Bluehost specific instructions are:

1. create an asterik “*” subdomain. Only this subdomain has to be created.

2. create sites from the new WordPress Multisites form page…

What backend are they using? Cpanel?

In other words, they just don’t want you to install it. ??

It’s a cPanel thing. My understanding is that it actually will work on the primary domain on the account, but not for addons. And it may require a Dedicated IP even to work on the primary domain. If you notice otherwise, mercadder, I’d love to hear it.

I am using subdomains on the primary domain, not a dedicated IP.

They have options for Wildcards when you want to redirect. For WordPress Multisites just create an “*” subdomain.

i tried the link up there on how to force subdirectorys, followed it to the letter but there was a few problems with the install after as in the super admin panel changes both sites and one site not being visible.

i wouldn’t mind using subdomains but i am using an add on domian as my main site.

Hi Everyone, I’m a newbie and have two existing WP installations in subfolders for two separate existing blogs that are hosted on Bluehost. I intend to migrate these two blogs to a new install of WP 3.0 multisite which I’ve already installed in the root directory and activated to multisite status by inserting the one line of code as per many of the tutorials I’ve seen.

However, in the next steps, I am confused whether to choose subdirectories or subdomains as I move forward in the installation. The various blogs within the multisite environment need to be completely separate from one another relative to URL addresses, identity, etc.

Does anyone have any advice and/or pros and cons of whether to use subdirectories or subdomains moving forward in the multisite installation? Thanks!

You mean ultimately you’ll be domain mapping them? If you, either will do. but in your case on bluehost, I’d just go with subfolders.

1. Create a fresh WordPress installation
2. Export your two existing blogs to files. Those are in subfolders.
3. Create network with WordPress multisite: choose subfolders.
4. Import each blog manually.

It will be easy keep the same subfolders scheme, at least you want to deal with the databases…
