WordPress 3.4 RC1 Ticket Reviews vs Nightly Builds

There’s probably a better way to do this (I’m behind in reading about trac) but start here for the current one.

I’m running 20980 (svn is my friend) so that gives me a great view into what 20980 is/has patch wise.

This looks like the log for 20970

Are “bleeding edge nightly builds” collectively grouped as a batch to uploaded once/per day;

That one ?? The build is generated, any implemented tickets are added and pulled by the Beta Tester plugin ?? As captain obvious as that was.

Can my website be constantly updated in hour-by-hour, real-time improvements chosen by me?

Probably, but most of us are lazy and just use SVN with cron ??

Are tickets that are only labeled “commit” update-able, or are any current tickets update-able.

Technically any ticket is updatable, even after closure. IIRC they’ll usually make a new ticket, rather than re-use an old one, it a committed patch has a bug. When labeled commit, it means everyone thinks it’s good and off to the races with you, young man ??

Thanks for your response. The problem is…that you, are smarter than I am. I still don’t quite get where things are placed as they progress.

Case in point. Currently at 3:36pm EST, Planet Earth, Milky Way Galaxy; there are 5 tickets in the 3.4 Next Major Release, View Tickets column.

All of those entries, except for one are todays date: 06/04/12. Previously, 7 were there 5 of which were labeled “commit”. I assume that 2 of them went to software heaven.

I thought, I could obtain those heaven sent tickets by updating my site using the Beta Tester plugin. I actually did that approximately 20 minutes ago…….I still have the same version number: 20979. Therefore, I assume that I did not obtain any of those angelic improvements.

Where are they, and will they be update-able at a particular time on today’s date. Or, do I just have all this wrong?

Here is another way for me to question this: when tickets are labeled “commit”, and then disappear. Where do they go, and how long before I can get them.

And again………..I’m not complaining……I’m trying to learn.

You’d have to pay attention to trac a lot closer. And it’s going to make you want to drink ??

I actually watch https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/timeline to get a feel for what’s being commited. Nothing was committed on Sunday, today we’ve had 14 so far. There are also a whole mess of reports – https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/report – which show you where things are sorted.

If you want to have fun, look at this query. That’s a query of all closed tickets that are ‘fixed’ in reverse order and is a pretty accurate list of what’s been closed and added to WP.

I want to say the clock is ET, but it may be UTC. Whenever that clock flips over is when the nightly is dynamically generated. (So far the smartass answer I got was ‘nighttime.’)

I like your ending sense of humor….it is slightly sarcastic, but polite at the same time. I’m going to mull over these links that you’ve given me, and stop asking questions for a while.

I don’t sing…I howl; BUT I’m thinking about writing a song entitled:

“I Want to Be a Programmer, So xxxxxxxxxx Bad!”.

I’m not being sarcastic, I’m just having a hard time keeping up.

Slightly sarcastic but polite … I don’t often get the ‘but polite’ ?? People often see terse answers as being rude. It’s a pretty complicated thing, though, and if you have any ‘traditional’ development experience, it’s even weirder to look at how open source does things.

RC1 is a ‘we think this is ready…’ version of WP 3.4

Nightly builds are ‘whatever’s committed when the clock flips over’

SVN is ‘whatever’s committed at this very second.’

Like Jan, I run my site on SVN. See Updating WP with SVN: Tracking Trunk for more. I also wrote a quick cron job that runs every 4 hours and does an ‘svn up’ to keep me mostly current. That means when I see a problem, the first thing I go is force SVN to update, then test again ?? Amazingly a lot of problems are fixed that fast!

If I recall correctly, nightly builds are built at 2300 UTC.
