After upgrading, almost every single photo I had uploaded is gone. In the Media Library, WP recognises there WERE photos there but not one image displays, which for a photography blog is absolutely disastrous. Cant say Im too happy. Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • MumPages — LOL! You give me far too much credit! No Gallery plug in. Just the media library that came with WordPress.

Bev, you have a different issue, since Mum’s was that somehow the URL for the images was goobered (which I would put dollar down on a weird permalink issue from a plugin…)

I will stress this again: WordPress core doesn’t know how to delete wp-content/uploads.

    I wrote this in 2011, it’s still valid: https://halfelf.org/2011/how-the-wordpress-upgrade-works/

WP can ONLY delete what it’s told. We’re not that reckless ??

    OK, whatever.

Regardless of whether WP deletes or not, the photos I uploaded at the beginning of the month no longer show up in my media library–though they exist in the FTP folders and they show up on my blog.

I’ve been on WordPress for 5 very happy years. This is the first time I’ve ever had to seek help. Thanks to MumPages for at least giving me some validation and direction.

I’m outta here–unless anyone else has a bright idea on how to restore the connection between the FTP folders and the media library.

You may have corrupted meta data. I created a small plugin that will rebuild your image meta data. Download it here on GitHub.

Upload, activate, run and then rebuild your thumbnails with something like the Force Regenerate Thumbnails plugin.

This morning, thumbnails showed for the 50+ posts on my site, but all the posts had the blank boxes with the name of the photo that should be there. I went through them one by one (500 pictures) and used the Replace button, which restored the original pictures. A terrible chore, but it worked.

I’ve now, though, accidentally found what the issue was. The URLs for the photos had suddenly lost the / (slash) that should have been in wordpress(/)wpcontent.

I’d like to know how this disappeared (upgraded to 3.9?) and whether there was a simpler way to go back and restore all the missing slashes to repair the URLs.

Hate this sort of confidence-knocking thing. It happened to me even worse on the last upgrade. That time, I had to actually re-upload every photo.

    Hi
I have tried to upgrade a multisite install, running on iis. The wordpress install is on 3.5.1, and I have tried to upgrade to 3.9.

I have exeperienced the missing images issue.
On the media library screen, none if the images have thumbnails. Looking at the source of the image it is missing the “wp-content/blogs.dir/SITEID”. Looking on the server, the files are there.

When I look at the site settings in the network admin, the upload paths seem correct.
I have since had to revert to a snapshot of the 3.5.1, as I couldn’t resolve the media issues.

    Help appreciated..
    Thanks
