    Hi,
I’m in a bit of a pickle. I just finished writing a long post, then clicked “Update to 4.2” as it just appeared. It took about 10 min on the “updating” screen which I thought was odd. Now it is giving me this fatal error whenever I go to anywhere on my site (including admin control panel) Note: I updated from 4.1.2, was it? (Whatever it was, I was up-to-date already)
Fatal error: Call to undefined function _wp_scripts_maybe_doing_it_wrong() in /homepages/18/d158023841/htdocs/mc/wp-includes/functions.wp-styles.php on line 154

Any ideas? It’s not allowing me to do anything. Every time I click something on/in my ACP it takes me to a page displaying the above.

Any/all help is welcome. Is this something I might need to fully reinstall WP with or something I can correct in the functions.wp-styles.php file?
    My site is https://www.mcoale.com
    Thanks again.

  • MCoale, sorry to hear it. I’m actually replying to report that I also experienced a crash a moment ago when attempting to update from 4.1.2 to 4.2. It’s been a long, long time since any automatic update crashed the site. Thankfully, I was able to restore via VaultPress very easily–but yeah, it took long amount of time to apply the update and then … white screen of death.

Just wanted to chime in to say I’ve also experienced problems. For what it’s worth, not every site I’ve updated has had this issue, so who knows.

Not hijacking thread. Just to let you know you are not the only one.

My site also crashed when I click to update to 4.2.

I dont get any error just blank white page

I got it to work. Here’s how I fixed it:
    1. Download WordPress 4.2
    2. Login via FTP
    3. Upload/contents of WordPress 4.2 to my server (Overwriting pre-existing files)
    4. Viola!

Hope this fix works for others!

    Thanks for the responses guys!

Same problem for me. I have 4-6 sites updated automatically, and had the problem on three of them. I fixed my problem by copying “good” twentyeleve theme folder from sites that updated OK, and used those same theme folders on the “bad update” sites with FTP. All of my problems were with the twentyeleven theme. Fortunately I was using child themes on all of the problem sites, thus I could use the same “good” twentyeleven folder on all of the bad sites.

I use HostGator hosting, and the problem updates were all automatic updates. Has anyone had this problem with OTHER hosts, or is it unique to HostGator?

My 4.2 upgrade seemed to go OK, but it cratered when I updated the plugins. Hope my backup is good!

Hmmmmm… it recovered on its own… I got an initial fatal error message followed by a ‘Sorry, the site is temporally unavailable’ for about 5 minutes, then it just came back up. Hooray!

I had to restore my last site backup.

Luckily I made backup day before.

Only lost some changes I done that day.

After restoring backup didnt apply 4.2 update.
Will wait little to see if other experience same issue and solutions to it.

I am trying to upgrade and it won’t work. GoDaddy gave me a link to make some changes in my php5.ini which I did, but it hasn’t fixed the following error

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in D:\Hosting\11464627\html\wp-admin\includes\file.php on line 159

Any suggestions? I don’t have an FTP client, so not familiar with uploading the update that way. Can it be done through godaddy?

I’m having exactly the same problem as you, keepitclassic. I am with GoDaddy also.

One of our clients has this issue and our hosting service (NOT GoDaddy) said the domain name from GoDaddy was no longer pointing to the servers where we have the site hosted—which is odd because no one’s touched that.

I’m going to try the upload and overwrite like the others suggested and see what happens.

I’m having the same problem. I wasn’t writing a post, just updating, and immediately after installing anytime I tried to access the admin page it just came up white. Now I can’t access the login url at all. It’s just a blank white page. Anyone know how I can fix this if I can’t log in? Thanks!

My site is https://www.friedmagazine.com and I’m hosted with GoDaddy.

The FTP upload and overwrite worked.

I had this problem too. Tried everything. Eventually had to call host and they rolled it back to wp 4.1.3 or whichever was before 4.2. Finally back in admin. I have bluehost

@mcoale’s solution worked for me, too! I was having all kinds of weird errors and issues and updating to 4.2 fixed them all.

If you are a WP rookie and generally don’t understand how all the back-end stuff works (like me!), here’s a quick tutorial on how to update WordPress via the FTP.

Definitely do a backup first in case something goes wrong.
