    Hi,
I’m in a bit of a pickle. I just finished writing a long post, then clicked “Update to 4.2” as it just appeared. It took about 10 min on the “updating” screen which I thought was odd. Now it is giving me this fatal error whenever I go to anywhere on my site (including admin control panel) Note: I updated from 4.1.2, was it? (Whatever it was, I was up-to-date already)
Fatal error: Call to undefined function _wp_scripts_maybe_doing_it_wrong() in /homepages/18/d158023841/htdocs/mc/wp-includes/functions.wp-styles.php on line 154

Any ideas? It’s not allowing me to do anything. Every time I click something on/in my ACP it takes me to a page displaying the above.

Any/all help is welcome. Is this something I might need to fully reinstall WP with or something I can correct in the functions.wp-styles.php file?
    My site is https://www.mcoale.com
    Thanks again.

  • I have the same error… different line. my computer crashed during the update.

If I load the wp files manually through the FTP application, will I lose my content and membership data?

I’m using membermouse for my content and membership billing.

@darsen I am a rookie so I can only comment based on my personal experience, but I did not have any issues with content being lost. Everything was in tact after the manual update via FTP. I did do a full backup before I changed anything, and I would suggest you do the same. Good luck!

Do not copy over wp-content!!!! Just wp-includes and wp-asking folders. Take backups of your .ht access file and wp-config files.

@darsen as casuallyglam mentioned, do a full backup if possible. I was personally unable to access my dashboard/backend, so I manually downloaded my whole wp site to my local hard-drive. This may have been overkill, but I found it necessary, as I didn’t want to lose everything.
After that, I manually copied the 4.2 files, overwriting the site. Doing this didn’t affect any posts or data on my site.
NOTE: try to only copy the contents of the folder where you’re getting the error messages for first, then branch out.

All the content should already be saved to a database on your server, so you should be fine doing this, however, as I mentioned, it’s wise to backup first! Hope this helps.

    @ MCoale & @ casuallyglam

Thank you. All my content was in fact on the database. I saved a back up for safety but I simply downloaded the new version of WP and overwrote all the files using my FTP app… I use FileZilla.. It took a few minutes but everything works great now. Thank you again…

Hurrah! That is great news, @darsen!!

    Hello
I tried auto update WordPress 4.2.2 & it ended with error message
“Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_json_encode() in D:\Hosting\13762694\html\wp-admin\includes\misc.php on line 668”

I can’t logout neither update my website.
Can anyone guide me how to fix problem please?
    Reagrds,
    Moufid
