Hello. I updated my wordpress to the lateset 5.3. Today I tried to update an xls file and I get an error message:
There has been a critical error on your website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

I see this message, and if I try to make a new entry and if I try to update an existing table. I read that the latest 5.3 has brought a lot of problems for many plugins. If you can have a look at it. Already imported tables work just fine.

    Thank you

Update: I imported it finally. Thank you

    Hi,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

Did you find a cause for this? But good to hear that it worked ??

    Best wishes,
    Tobias

Yes I found the cause. For some strange reason the excel file was too big and couldn’t get uploaded. I found it after I wrote this. Had to edit the file many times, till excel minizes the size to some kb.

Thank you again for this wonderful plugin

    Hi,

ah, ok. Thanks for the explanation! If this happens again, you could also try saving the table to a CSV and then import that into TablePress. This often works better.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias

    Hi @jacid,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having problems with WordPress 5.3. However, just to confirm: Are these related to the TablePress plugin, i.e. are you using that? I’m asking because you asked in the specific support forums for that TablePress plugin.
If TablePress is not used, I’m afraid that this is the wrong place for this support request. Please try asking again at https://www.ads-software.com/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/
    Thanks for your understanding!

(By the way, this error message sounds as if there’s not enough PHP memory available on the server. You could try fixing this by increasing the value of the WP_MEMORY_LIMIT constant, see https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/editing-wp-config-php/#increasing-memory-allocated-to-php
Please also make sure that your server uses a recent version of PHP, like PHP 7.3.

    Regards,
    Tobias

@jacid Just a follow up to what @tobiasbg said. That error is a PHP memory limit. And it appears to be a WordPress memory limit. That can be easily fixed by increasing your allocated memory (up to your hostings PHP Memory limit) in the wp-config.php file.

The link @tobiasbg provided you are good instructions on changing. But I personally would recommend a minimum of 128M, or better yet 256M.

    Hi,

good point by Roy! The value should indeed be 256M if possible, just to be safe. In addition, recent versions of PHP are much more memory-efficient, so that should also be checked.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias
