• So it appears from testing a few types of WP sites with various types of setups from basic block editor blogs, to page builders like elementor and e-com sites with Woo Commerce, that for some reason the new 5.8 updates and various plugin updates have slowed sites to a crawl, running through GT Metrix, Lighthouse etc, webp images, CDNs, WP Rocket cache plugins, fast hosting makes no difference, adds seconds to site speed, scores going from 90+/A to F across a range of platform types so there is no blame to place on one plugin or other etc…

  • Are you using WooCommerce? If so, try updating it to v5.5.2.
Recently released security update (v5.5.1) caused some problems, details here:
    https://developer.woocommerce.com/2021/07/23/woocommerce-5-5-2-fix-release/

They will no longer push auto-updates to WooCommerce since v5.5.2 apparently.

lol…yes, all the sites are using the most recent updates and the computers are all plugged in as well..remember this is not one type of site its occurring across many types of sites..and it seems these sites are not the only sites with these issues from reading the comments..here is another puzzle piece this has been tested using different CDN’s from different providers at different PHP levels from 7-8.

Haven’t seen any other reports on issues with site speed and WordPress 5.8. What is common between the sites (e.g. same server, theme, plugin X)? What happens if you disable all plugins and activate a stock WordPress theme (e.g. Twenty-Twenty-one)?

uh huh, googling it may help…: heres one for example, since you had trouble finding it..

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/5-8-site-slow-media-library-not-loading-widgets-editting-cumbersome-etc/

lets say this, if the only say the new update works great is with a completely stripped down theme, with no plugins and no images, then i think you are admitting the problem right there

What I am saying is there is no deluge of support posts in the forum regarding a speed issue, despite 9.5 million downloads/updates of WordPress 5.8, thus ruling out an issue with WordPress core. The issue with the post you linked to above was resolved by installing https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/classic-widgets, likley because the theme and/or plugins were not compatible with WordPress 5.8, where the block editing has been expanded to include the widgets. Perhaps you could try installing that plugin.

The idea behind testing with a default theme and no plugins is the standard troubleshooting procedure to find the cause of a conflict (e.g. faulty WordPress core update, theme or plugin not compatible with core update).

Keep in mind that there are over 60,000 plugins and themes in the WordPress repository. It is the plugin and theme developers’ responsibility to ensure compatibility with the latest version of WordPress, not vice versa.

well, I think anyone reading this has advanced experience that every-time there is an update something is always amiss. Then CS spends weeks deflecting and blaming it on something else, always small, until the issue crashes half the sites using it…and then they are forced to look at it and fix it..the responses here are exact evidence of that..the fact is most people dont even check their speed scores often so most probably haven’t even noticed what has happend yet. It may not be the WP 5.8 update alone but other common plugins, no one is blaming WP 5.8, but given that all themes and plugins have almost no complete functionality alone so they can charge 89 dollars for a small and minor thing like meta descriptions or a mega menu etc..this is a problem ,since site speed is shoved down everyones throats to cover for slow mobile phone service
