• Since upgrading to WordPress 6.2 I have noticed gallery caption text is now displayed in fairly small white text, with a gradient background, over the image (towards the bottom).

Previously, captions have appeared underneath each image, which is my preferred behaviour primarily for reasons of accessibility.

Captions were definitely set this way prior to 6.2 and I don’t believe any theme has altered this.

Is there an easy way of returning to a similar style as used previously, for example black text underneath the relevant image? I have looked at the styles available but none seem to have an effect on the overall feel.

Going forward it would be nice if this kind of style decision was left to individual themes to implement rather than brought out in core WordPress point upgrade (and apologies if it’s not, but I’ve been through every part of the settings for the theme I use and don’t see any options for this so I have to presume this has come as a result of the WP version upgrade, particularly given the timing as well.)

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/
It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, without affecting normal visitors to your site. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.
There’s a more detailed description about how to use the Health Check plugin and its Troubleshooting Mode at https://make.www.ads-software.com/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/

    Thanks, I’ll try this.

Just for the record, inserting a single image (non gallery) the caption still appears under the image, as before.

The caption is also moved to underneath the gallery image if the image style is changed from ‘default’ to ’rounded’.

I’ve tried on a different blog which admittedly does use the same theme, but when I switch to a default theme (eg Twenty Nineteen, Twenty Twenty) the gallery captions are still done like this. Even after deactivating all plugins (there were only 4 on the blog I’ve just tried, and none supposed to be related to layout/styling), no caching, new browser, incognito browser, etc. etc.

Perhaps I’m going mad and they were always like this but I genuinely don’t recall them being like this for galleries.

I’m not sure it’s a bug per se, not really sure what I’m looking for either.

The closest class is wp-element-caption but this doesn’t seem to be explicitly defined anywhere. There are a few CSS styles within wp-admin for the HTML tag <figcaption> but they don’t seem to define a whole lot either.

It would be interesting if anyone has observed this behaviour on their site, either since or pre-6.2. I will just have to leave it for now as I need to be creating, not bug hunting ?? It’s not terrible on the scheme of things but it’s not how I’d choose it to be ideally.

Actually, having looked online at some docs and tutorials from several years ago, I’ve seen galleries with the captions over the image.

Maybe the issue is I’ve deactivated/deleted a plugin which added functionality to the standard gallery.

    Oh well. :/

There are some additional troubleshooting steps suggested in this 6.2 Master List

I had the same problem, but the legend button for gallery is now above your gallery…
