• I originally setup the website using a particular domain (ex. originaldomain.com) but now that we are ready to go live, I need to use a different domain name (ex. newdomain.com) for the website and remove altogether any reference to the original website.

I have newdomain.com’s nameservers pointed to the website files on the host so it is pulling up but all of the menu links, URL’s etc are still pointed to the originaldomain.com.

In the general settings, there is an option for WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL). I’m assuming I need to change the “Site Address” to newdomain.com but I made the mistake on a previous website of changing BOTH of these settings and the entire website was broken, even the login and I found online that I had to manually go into MyPHP Admin to point the database back to the original URL to gain access to the admin again.

I don’t want to “break” the site and cause it to go down now that we are live.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • If should go past XXX files copied (there will be updating database, etc…). Does it look like it stopped?

When I click on pages within wordpress, all of them are there. When I edit, everything appears fine but if I click Preview Changes or View, I get the Internal Error. I’m assuming this has something to do with the database. Any ideas?

It got to the screen that says pass this along to all your friends so i assume it was finished.

Yes, I do remember it saying updating database.

I am absolutely amazed at how fast it transferred 4000 files, imported all of my images into wordpress, all my plugins are there, all pages, post categories, portfolio categories. I am super grateful for your script!

From uploading the two files to my server until the time it finished was less than 5 minutes (probably even less).

Think I have some of it figured out. I went to edit a page and just clicked Update and now the pages are loading. I’m going through all of the pages now and Updating them.

I think I have figured this out, at least partially. The issue is most likely connected to the fact that some of your website links had “www.” in front of them, and some did not. I am now modifying the script so that it changes both variants automatically.

If you want, you could re-try this in half an hour when I finish this fix (the script will re-write everything on target though, so if you have already started making changes then you will probably not want to repeat this) ??

Anyway, I am happy I was able to save you some time and at the same time make a fix for 1and1 hosting ??

You should have a donate button on your website. Would be glad to send a small thank you. ??

I have updated the script to v0.6 and included a fix for this issue (mixed www and no-www urls not being properly converted to new domain). If you decide to try it – please let me know how it goes.

Maybe after I polish this a little bit more ??

By the way, how did you resolve the Internal server error?

    Thread Starter youthman

    (@youthman)

I stated it above….I had to go to each individual page and just hit the Update button. Guess that synched it with the database.

Only problem I’m seeing now is on the homepage, there are two widgets that when you mouseover the “View More” and “Find Out More” buttons, they still link to the old website.

    I’m looking at them now.

Figured out why they were linking to the old website. In the theme, there is a place where you have to manually tell it what page you want those two buttons to link to. I corrected the URL and all is well!So that wasn’t anything to do with your script.

For anyone needing to move their wordpress website to a new domain, to a new host, to both or to a different folder on their web host, I HIGHLY recommend halty’s script. It saved me a TON of work and was extremely easy to use.

Once you upload the two files to your server, navigate to that file in your browser, it asks you a few questions about the server settings, IP address etc and the script literally does ALL the work for you.

Thanks again halty! I’m looking over every page carefully, clicking on all of the links to make sure all is working properly but so far, everything looks fantastic!

Ah, wow, thanks for the update!

Can you tell me the name of the theme? I will see if I can add automatic link update for it as well ??
