WordPress adress setting

    I brought a domain name and set a a record to my virtual machine ip.
    So far the go to my site through domain is fine.

    I would like to ask if setting the address in WordPress is necessary. And what is the difference if I set it or not.

  • That depends on whether you set up the domain first and opened the domain in the browser to install WordPress, or you had WordPress running already with the server’s IP address (or temporary domain) before you purchased and pointed the new domain.

    If it’s the former case, you should be good.

    If it’s the latter case, then ALL your internal pages will have the IP address (or temporary domain) in their URLs instead of the domain name!

    To test this, simply open ANY page (other than the homepage) and check what address you see in the browser’s address bar.

    I think of this too. When I open my page with domain, then open any page, it is under https://domain.com/hello-world/.

    but when I open my page first with ip, then every other page or post will be xx.xxx.xxx.xx/hello-world/.

    I am latter case, set up the wordpress first and buy domain later.
    Should I just leave it? Any other advantage to set up the address in wordpress?

    What do you have in SETTINGS => GENERAL (under WordPress Address & Site Address)?

    SEO, for one. Having the same content available from different addresses (often called “Duplicate Content” problem) may cause all sorts of search engine indexing, ranking, and reporting issues.

    If SEO is a non-issue for you, here’s another potential problem: all images and other files uploaded from the WordPress interface will use the configured address in the file’s URL. So if your site has the IP address (instead of the domain name), then all the images and other files on your site will use the IP address for their URLs.

    These absolute URLs are stored in the database.

    This will work fine… until you ever need to move your site to a new server (meaning a new IP address!). Then all the images on your site will be completely broken.

    Oh, that will be a omg situation. Thankyou giving the info.

    I figure my address and site setting changes for what I go to website with.

    If I go by domain, then it is domain.
    If I go with my ip, then it is ip number.

    It’s this normal? Hope their will have duplicate seo ploblem.
    I use GCP and Google Domain if it matters.

    Btw, if I set the address from ip to domain, am I still able to get in with ip？
