I tried a partial upgrade of a couple of plugins and got the message that the site was down due to maintenance. I somehow got it wroking again by going back in the browser and clicking here there and everywhere. This and the need to do a backup means I would like to access the site using ftp. This I cannot do I’m getting a 530 error over the password I use to login to my blog on WP. What’s going on?

  • Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

The problem is I tried upgrading a couple of plugins as suggested by them. One didn’t upgrade and I got “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute”. I somehow managed to get rid of this but looked it up and realised I may need to use ftp, I will for making a backup anyway. But I cannot login using the ftp it doesn’t recognise my password.

Response: 331 User admin OK. Password required
    Command: PASS ************
    Response: 530 Login authentication failed
    Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

You need to contact your hosts for assistance with your FTP access.

Your FTP password may not be your WordPress password.

Thanks that’s what I thought unfortunatley its slightly more complicated than that since I didn’t set the thing up but a friend of a friend did…
