• Hi all.

I’d like to use WordPress for an organization which needs a secure central posting and discussion platform. However, they also need to have a file repository with different documents (pdfs, docs, xls, jpegs) which can be updated and discussed by users. For this, Wikimedia seems more appropriate. I tried doing that with WordPress but there seems to be no way for a user to replace a media file by another one. I could use both platforms and link between them but this seems like a big hassle, especially since there will be two accounts for each user, and also because both use a commenting/discussion system.

Does anyone have any idea on how I might build this?

  • Mediawiki is certainly more geared for your needs and for tracking a history of edits.

But you might also look at WordPress download manage type pugins, e.g. https://blue-anvil.com/archives/wordpress-download-monitor-plugin-2-wordpress-25-ready

Thanks for the info. The download monitor is a nice plugin but not really suited to a collaborative environment imho. The problem with MediaWiki is that users have to be a bit web-savvy in order to use it, which is not the case with the people the site is intended for… I’m looking into stuff like Joomla to see if it can handle what I need, although it would be a pain to leave WordPress behind.
