  • No. Why would anybody do it?
    WP is a blogging tool.

    If you theme it right then wordpress makes a good basic forum right out of the box.

    It makes more sense to use the right tool for the job IMHO.

    @ajd777,
    any link to a working example?
    (and what Xander said…)

    @moshu
    I have never seen anyone do it except for me, and unfortunately that never left localhost.

    But there was a theme built back for 1.5 that made WP look like a forum…

    If you take something like that and add some more custom stuff it is really easy to make breadcrumbs, integrate the editor into the theme, and all the other things that people expect in a forum. You can even make private messages if you filter the posts correctly.

    There are a couple plugin forums that partially integrate into WP (the later seems to take it further), but they could be taken even further.

    I do agree with Xander; although WordPress can do it, it might not necessarily be the use for it — kinda like building furniture out of FedEx boxes.

    I’ve got xdforum Plugin running on a server wordpress I’ve set up – not complex, but does what I was looking for.Here’s a link – you’ll have to register before you can see it – I won’t kick you off if you don’t put spam on my site!!

    With all due respect to those people who want to keep WP as blogging software, the fact is that with vast plugin support, built-in registration, abstraction of much of the coding, big theme support, WP makes a very suitable CMS … if you can just tweak it here and there … a little … bit …

    Sorry – unnecessary post – now edited ….

    Using a plugin to have a forum integrated in WP is one thing. Making WP to behave like a forum is a totally different thing… and probably not worth the effort.

    And yes, I used WP as a CMS when very few people did it. But that’s beyond the point. We are not talking CMS in this topic.

    WP is not the right tool for a forum.

    Really it isn’t that hard you already have the three basic needs of a forum: replies ->comments, threads->posts, sub-forums->categories. Anyone who used the old fashioned list type forums would be happy.
