    Hello.

I have a Pixelpost photoblog and am very happy with it. For my writing I have been using a blogger account, and that is what I’m not happy with.

What I’d like to do is have https://www.613photo.com stay the same…it goes directly to the photoblog. Then I’d like to have https://www.613photo.com/blog that goes to a wordpress blog that I can write on. I do not care about importing my posts from blogger. Since I’ve never been happy with that arrangement I’ve never done any serious writing there.

Before I can begin I have to know if this is going to be complicated or not. I think my host can handle it. Someone told me I just need to be able to have more than one MySQL host, and when I go to my host’s “control panel” I have up to ten that I can use. It’s Linux, Apache, can do PHP and all that.

I really don’t know a lot about the internet and websites and stuff. Please let me know if what I want to do is possible, and if so, what the degree of difficulty is. I was able to set up the Pixelpost blog on my own a couple years ago and don’t remember having any trouble doing that, so I’m not stupid. I just lack experience and don’t know the terminology.

When I search for help I find tips about migrating, which I do not want to do. I just want to add a wordpress blog.

    Thanks!

  • Hi.

In your hosting account, if you have access to creating subdomains under your 613photo.com domain, then it is fairly simple to just add WordPress that way and start blogging from scratch. Does your host have Fantastico or one click installation of WordPress? This way you don’t have to do the manual mySQL database creation.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t know what fantastico is, but they do have an option for installing wordpress from within the host’s control panel. I was afraid that doing so would wipe out my pixelpost blog, though.

I think I can create a subdomain but I don’t know if it costs extra.

In your control panel do you see any subdomain options under ‘Domains’? Do you see any information about your hosting account including this at no additional cost?

Actually I just found that option as I got the e-mail notification of your last reply. Apparently I can add a subdomain, but the option confuses me a little.

If I click “add”, it comes up in a little window and has a blank (ie – ________.613photo.com, and I guess I’d type in “blog” where the blank is).

But then there are two radial buttons below that:

I can choose “Same as Subdomain (/<subdomain>)”
    or
    Create or select a folder

You would type ‘blog’ where the blank field is and ‘same as subdomain’ may mean that you want the folder to be the same name as ‘blog'(first radio button) instead of creating another name or selecting an existing folder(second radio button). Is there any other wording around the buttons or above them? I would choose same as subdomain…

then once it is created you wold go to the WordPress install feature and if you did the subdomain creation correctly, some drop down or something will show the subdomains you can choose from to install onto. Make sure you are not choosing just “613photo.com”

    What host do you have?

I have GoDaddy. I know people complain about them but it’s always worked out for me pretty well.

I’ve done what you said to do. Called godaddy and they say that everything looks okay and it will take a couple hours to install.

It’s probably already on there, though. I haven’t tried visiting it yet.

Thanks a million for your help.

I am glad you are on your way to blogging with WordPress ??

Thanks. I THINK I am. Still getting a 403 error at blog.613photo.com. He did say it would take a couple hours, but I don’t know why it would take that long, and the last time they said something would take a couple hours, it only took five minutes. To double check, I opened up an FTP connection and the “blog” folder is still empty.

Correct…A blank folder is a sign that it is not installed yet. When you see folders with wp_ as a prefix, etc. then it is installed by Godaddy and you can see it at the url and start logging in.

Thanks. Still waiting. I went back to the GoDaddy site and it said it could take up to 24 hours. Wow. That’s pretty slow. I hope it doesn’t actually take that long.

I’d like to get started. Since I’ve never used WordPress I’d like to see how it all works.

Interestingly, when I type in “www.blog.613photo.com “, I get a search engine from my cable company. Not getting the 403 “Forbidden” error anymore. Don’t know if that means anything or not.

https://www.blog.613photo.com is actually not the same as blog.613photo.com

Here is a WordPress topic that explains the difference and what you could do if you want people to go to the https://www.subdomain.domain.com

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/wwwsubdomaindomaincom-not-working?replies=4

Do you have a preference for:

    https://www.613photo.com/blog
    vs.
    blog.613photo.com ?

Godaddy can take some time with those installs but then the other option is to install it manually which was not the easier way for you in having to manually create mySQL databases and upload WordPress files.

When you do finally log in, there is still an option to change the url to the 613photo.com/blog if you really want it to be accessed that way…. but that is another story…

    Hi.

I was on the horn with godaddy again and he was explaining that right when I got your email. He wasn’t sure why the wordpress install didn’t go through the first time. Said he couldn’t see where I clicked “finish”, but I know I did because when he and I went through it again I remember seeing that next page after you click “finish”.

Anyway, blog.613photo.com is fine with me. I don’t really have a preference.

Once again I really appreciate the help.
