WordPress database error Illegal mix of collations

  • I recently opened my error log to find a lot of “WordPress database error Illegal mix of collations” errors. And there seem to be references to a lot of blogspot and other sites which I do not understand why they are there. Here is a sample of my error log

    Could someone please help me if I am safe here or is Google seeing such spam links on my site and is penalizing my rankings. I have suffered quite a bit of SEO rank drop of late.

  • Do you have such comments in your database?

    I also have such errors in my error log.

    I don’t think these comments are there in the database.

    I am wondering if these errors can occur if spam comments are submitted on my site, even if those comments are routed to the spam queue by Akismet and are later deleted by me?

    What I’m saying is, can submitted comments cause this too? Or does it happen only when such approved comments are found in the database?
