Several months ago WordPress decided for itself that my username was “Invalid” and would not log me in. Tried posting to the “help” forum and went through complicated process to reset password using phpMyAdmin, even though the password was never the problem. No luck, had to abandon my site and all the work I had done.

So today, started back at the very beginning. Went to www.ads-software.com, downloaded WordPress as if I’d never done it before, uploaded all the WordPress files to a new, completely different website directory than before, created a new Database and new User with my webhost, entered all the new database, user and host info, new WordPress.com Username and password, and got a page showing a very long block of gobbledy gook jibberish with the word “error” appearing in it a few times, but at the bottom of the page was a “success” confirmation message that I had successfully installed WordPress, (apparently not possib;e to include a screen capture here?).

Sound good so far? I thought so. Clicked the Log In link, was asked to enter the same info (again) that I had just entered for the new site name and user name, password, email address, etc. Clicked the Log In link, was asked to enter the same info (again) that I had just entered for the new site name and user name, password, email address, etc. Clicked the Log In link, was asked to enter the same info (again) that I had just entered for the new site name and user name, password, email address, etc. Clicked the Log In link, was asked to enter the same info (again) that I had just entered for the new site name and user name, password, email address, etc.

    Ad Nauseum.

“Famous 5 minute installation”? This is my third time around over the last several years of unsuccessfully attempting to install WordPress and create a new website.. What’s the issue here, exactly??

I am pretty sure I have asked you before in your other topic but what is the user ID on https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/ that you are using?

Not the password, just the ID. For example when I login to one of the WordPress installations I post to my ID is “jdembowski” (no quotes of course).

    What’s the issue here, exactly??

I believe you are mixing accounts on your WordPress installation with accounts on the forums or elsewhere.

Please be aware that your forum account here is “walkrrrr” and 100% has no connection to your blog. Zero. Nothing. Nope, nope, nope, no connection. Same with WordPress.COM accounts.

If you can provide that the ID name then I may be able to figure out what’s going on with you.

    Hi, thanks.

This is a brand new installation as of yesterday, to a totally different domain, new email address, all changed as I started back at square one trying to resolve this issue that I ran into a few months ago that was never resolved.

It’s a new site on WordPress.com (NOT .org). I’m just posting here trying to figure out why I keep getting locked out of my WordPress.COM account.

    So, site is: gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords

Username (which I can verify when I check at phpMyAdmin) is: GllianBagwell@WordsWordsWords
(note the missing first “i”—that was a typo but I left it that way to try and avoid making confusing, unnecessary changes).

So I’ve checked phpMyAdmin and looked at the wp-config.php file and they both show the password the same, but I’m still not allowed in.

And fwiw, when I couldn’t get back in last night after successfully installing and logging in yesterday afternoon, I looked at the phpMyAdmin and saw that the password was somehow changed to a random string of characters, so I changed it within phpMyAdmin, and now WordPress.com tells me there is no account associated w/ the email address that I set this all up under (which shows correctly in phpMyAdmin).

If you have a blog on wordpress.com, you won’t have access to phpMyAdmin.

    Your https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords
    admin can be access via
    https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin

It is not associated to your WordPress.com account at all.

If I were able to log in to my WordPress.COM account, I would not be posting here at all. Perhaps the title of this thread would help to clarify the problem:

“WordPress does not recognize me or my account”.

I have installed WordPress (successfully) to my own domain, and through my webhost I am able to see the new database and new user info that I created just yesterday during the installation and have reviewed the info through phpMyAdmin to verify that I have the correct username, password, and email address. Which I do.

But WordPress thinks I don’t, so I am again LOCKED OUT of my WordPress.COM account.

    Thread Starter walkrrrr

    (@walkrrrr)

So when I go to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin, I am STILL locked out, same as if I go to https://wordpress.com and try to log in.

Really? Why on Earth would you write that to volunteers attempting to help you?

If I were able to log in to my WordPress.COM account, I would not be posting here at all. Perhaps the title of this thread would help to clarify the problem:

You can’t use your WordPress.COM account to log into your self-hosted WordPress installation. That .COM account is not connected to anything else. That is why I wrote the following above:

I believe you are mixing accounts on your WordPress installation with accounts on the forums or elsewhere.

Please be aware that your forum account here is “walkrrrr” and 100% has no connection to your blog. Zero. Nothing. Nope, nope, nope, no connection. Same with WordPress.COM accounts.

And I am afraid that when you wrote this:

But WordPress thinks I don’t, so I am again LOCKED OUT of my WordPress.COM account.

You’re either trying to use your .COM account to login to your self-hosted site (and that will flat out never work) or you’re looking for .COM support in the .ORG forums.

It’s a new site on WordPress.com (NOT .org). I’m just posting here trying to figure out why I keep getting locked out of my WordPress.COM account.

WordPress.COM is separate from www.ads-software.com. The two have nothing to do with each other and if you are seeking support for your .COM account or blog then I am afraid you are posting in the wrong place.

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/

This article can explain the differences.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

There is also the possibility that you are attempting to log into .COM with your self-hosted account; that doesn’t work either. As I’ve said the 2 are not connected in anyway.

    Thread Starter walkrrrr

    (@walkrrrr)

    OMG. Seriously?

I am not having any issues logging in to www.ads-software.com and I’m fully aware at this point that it is completely separate from WordPress.COM. I’m not sure why you keep bringing that up?

And there is absolutely NO support of any kind for WordPress.com self-hosted sites other than the “help” link at the top of the page which goes to “support forums”, which is where we are. So if there is someplace else that people should be looking for help on their self-hosted WordPress sites, I’d love to know about it.

    When I go to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin

    OR

    go to https://Wordpress.COM

And click on LogIn, then enter the info I used *yesterday* in a brand new successful installation, which worked at those URLs as of yesterday afternoon, I got the message that the info was “invalid” and I could not get in. Furthermore, when I clicked on the “forgot password” link, and entered the email address I had used *yesterday* in the brand new installation of WordPress, I got the message that there was no account to be found with that email address. That problem remains a mystery. I had not changed any login info, so I have no idea why it worked yesterday afternoon and stopped working last night. Again, screen captures galore of every step of the process verify that the log-in info I was entering today matched the info which worked yesterday.

Now, after spending a couple of hours in tech support chat w/my webhost, I am once again logged in to my self-hosted admin panel from one browser though the other browsers still tell me my info is invalid. Webhost stressed that MD5 needed to be selected when making a password change from within phpMyAdmin, or it could cause issues w/the database, so perhaps that was the problem.

Hopefully I will not suddenly find that the info which works right now is “invalid” 2 hours from now, because that is what has happened twice before now, with no concrete explanation.

Ah. I’m sorry, but you wrote the following.

It’s a new site on WordPress.com (NOT .org). I’m just posting here trying to figure out why I keep getting locked out of my WordPress.COM account.

    As well as

so I changed it within phpMyAdmin, and now WordPress.com tells me there is no account associated w/ the email address that I set this all up under (which shows correctly in phpMyAdmin).

    And this part too

But WordPress thinks I don’t, so I am again LOCKED OUT of my WordPress.COM account.

    And then this part

    OR

    go to https://Wordpress.COM

    And this part

So when I go to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin, I am STILL locked out, same as if I go to https://wordpress.com and try to log in.

So you can just maybe understand that other people get confused when you repeatedly bring up WordPress.COM? I think you can see why you might be confusing others such as myself? ??

So putting aside WordPress.COM: can you login to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin/ ?

If you can then that’s good. It’s unclear if you can or not.

    Thread Starter walkrrrr

    (@walkrrrr)

Well thank you for posting back. I still do not see any part of what I’ve written over the last 2 days which suggests in any way that I am having trouble logging into www.ads-software.com.

Everything you quoted made reference to issues with WordPress.COM, and as I said earlier, if there is some other place that users with self-hosted WordPress-based sites should be going to look for help, I’d love to know about it.

At this point, yes, I was finally able to log in with 2 different browsers now to https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-admin/ again after getting the message since yesterday that my log-in info was invalid. So far so good. I went through my webhost and changed the password (again) via phpMyAdmin, and made sure that “MD5” encryption was selected from the pull down menu in the edit user area, (as they suggested) which may have solved the problem.

    Thread Starter walkrrrr

    (@walkrrrr)

And just to clarify, the log-in info *IS* the same for both WordPress.com and for yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

If my login info won’t let me in to one of those, I can’t get into either. And if it WILL let me into one, I can get into both.

Neither of which has anything to do with logging in to www.ads-software.com.

I really, truly and honestly wish I understood what you are talking about.

You continue to bring up WordPress.COM and continue to insist that you’re not talking about WordPress.COM. And then you continue to insist that this has nothing to www.ads-software.com.

And just to clarify, the log-in info *IS* the same for both WordPress.com and for yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

There you go bringing up WordPress.COM again.

If my login info won’t let me in to one of those, I can’t get into either. And if it WILL let me into one, I can get into both.

That’s just not true and has been explained to you already.

This is only true if you manually make it the same account name and the same password. There is no connection between your self-hosted WordPress account, your WordPress.COM account and your forum account.

I’m including the forum account just to clarify with anyone who searches for this topic.

You can manually make the accounts the same (if the IDs are available) but changing a password on one system has no effect on any of the other accounts. When you update your self-hosted WordPress installation password it doesn’t do anything to your WordPress.COM account. Not a thing.

    Just to summarize:

    1. You can now get into your self-hosted installation and you’ve used this method to do that.

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Resetting_Your_Password#Through_phpMyAdmin

    2. Working with your password on your own self-hosted system has no effect on any other system. That’s a 2 way street meaning that changing your password on those other systems does nothing for your self-hosted installation.

    3. If you do have a problem with WordPress.COM related to your login then or WordPress.COM blog then please take it up with the WordPress.COM support forums.

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/

We have nothing to do with WordPress.COM in these forums. This article can explain some of that.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I’m now closing this topic. It’s really not being productive anymore.

created a new Database and new User with my webhost, entered all the new database, user and host info, new WordPress.com Username and password,

This is the part where you are getting lost.

The new installation has no connection to wordpress.COM. You could use the same user/pass that you have over there, but they are in no way related to each other.

And just to clarify, the log-in info *IS* the same for both WordPress.com and for yourwebsite.com/wp-admin

If my login info won’t let me in to one of those, I can’t get into either. And if it WILL let me into one, I can get into both.

Only if you choose it. But, your site has no coded connection to wordpress.com.

I’m just posting here trying to figure out why I keep getting locked out of my WordPress.COM account.

You have to post on wordpress.com forums for that.

Again – the self installed version has completely no relation to the other account. None. There nothing in to code to connect them.

https://gillianbagwell.com/wordswordswords/wp-login.php this is where you have to log in to your site; nowhere else.

It does not matter if you are logged in to wordpress.com or anywhere else. It is fully independent.

Write down the username as well as the password.

so I changed it within phpMyAdmin, and now WordPress.com tells me there is no account associated w/ the email address that I set this all up under (which shows correctly in phpMyAdmin).

The email address used to set up your install is not connected to your wordpress.com account. Not in any way. That is why you keep getting that message.
