WordPress has timeouts after plugin setup

I have installed konnichiwa and it is so far one of the simplest contect access plugins I have found (two thumbs up for that). But once I installed it I started getting 504 pages. This is not consistent with what is on the page since I can get the 504 on the login as much as i get it on a single post.
I would really appreciate some guidnance on this as I am fairly certain this is an issue on my side.
Some things that might be of note:
1- The categories are not being read by Konnichiwa so trying to set a rule by category only shows the uncategorized category
2- I am running this on a local virtual machine as I am testing several plugins to see how they sit together
3- I have done no special configuration to cKonnichiwa besides creating two subscription plans.
4- The plugins I have running at the time of the test are buddypress, thumb rating, socializer, eventmanager, and wpMandrill
