• Hello people,
I’ve received an alert explaining my wordpress hosting is expiring in a month. I only use wordpress to update my website about twice a year, but the price of renewal/month is pretty expensive. That is why I’m wondering- what happens when my wordpress host expires? Do I keep my website’s address? (thais-breton.com) Does my website stay intact? Do I loose all my website’s coding? If I don’t renew the wp hosting but need to use it again in 6 months, when I buy it back, will I find everything there as I left it?
Some of my questions may seem very silly, but try to bare in mind you are interacting with a very very website beginner (a friend did all of my site’s coding).
Thank you so much in advance for your help
    T

WordPress is the platform you are using at your host, and you would have no website at all without having both even if either was different.

what happens when my…host expires? Do I keep my website’s address?

Your domain or “address” is registered somewhere, possibly at your host doubling as a Registrar, and you would still own it and be able to use it at any host for as long as you keep its registration current and have a hosting account somewhere for accessing it.

    Does my website stay intact?

No, typically not. Once your hosting expires, the host typically wipes your site from its servers.

Do I loose all my website’s coding?

    Yes.

If I don’t renew the…hosting but need to use it again in 6 months, when I buy it back, will I find everything there as I left it?

No, and the same would be true no matter what you had previously had there. Even if your domain registration were current, you would have nothing at all and would have to begin from scratch.

Thank you Leejosepho for this harsh truth!

I may have confused things a little so let me ask you again: what is expiring from my account is not called “hosting” but it’s called ” starter managed wordpress”.

AND one of my two domains: I somehow have two domains, one of them is an address I don’t use (thaisbreton.com).

Are the above answers to my questions also valid if this starter managed wordpress expires?

Can I let thaisbreton.com expire without risking loosing content, if what I use is thais-breton.com ?

I don’t even know why I have two domain names, if I remember correctly, when I registered with wordpress they gave me a free domain name but I already had the thais-breton.com I wanted registered on go daddy.

    Are things always this confusing?

what is expiring from my account is not called “hosting” but it’s called ” starter managed wordpress”.

I do not know what that might specifically mean at your particular host, but some hosts do have various premium services in addition to simply selling hosting space at and usage of their servers. So, my guess there would be that you will either need to continue with that account or possibly move your site to different servers either at that host or another and then assume full responsibility for managing everything related to your site.

As to your two domains, you ultimately decide about paying their respective registration renewals whenever those might be due…and the free one might or might not be transferable to a different Registrar or host without first actually purchasing it. Domain registration is actually quite inexpensive, however, so that is really no big deal either way.

Are the above answers to my questions also valid if this starter managed wordpress expires?

If your hosting account then simply defaults back to hosting minus that feature there might be no problem, but I tend to doubt that is the case.

Can I let thaisbreton.com expire without risking loosing content, if what I use is thais-breton.com?

Both of those currently land at the same site and content, and that is bad for SEO for either. So while you could let either expire without losing content as long as your hosting account is still active, you have issues needing to be addressed even now and even if you change nothing else.
