Hello all. I’m in the process of rebuilding my website, and I want to import my old posts from my wordpress.com blog so that I can fill out my new blog and use the old posts for testing. I signed into my wordpress.com blog, went to Tools > Export, and performed a full export. Then I signed into the admin area of my new site, went to Tools > Import, and tried to import the XML file, but the importer isn’t working properly. The first time, it imported about a third of the photos. The second time another third. Then I tried importing it with the ‘import attachments’ box unchecked, and that imported the posts but none of the photos are attached to the posts.

As far as I can tell, all of the content has been imported, but I don’t really want to have to go through and manually insert all of the photos to the proper posts. How can I get this to work? The XML file is only 779 KB, so file size is not an issue.

Here’s my site if you want to have a look.

Try excluding the images folder from export. FTP the images separately after.

Thanks for responding, but I’m not sure what you mean by “FTP the images separately after.” How do I do that and ensure that the photos are all linked to the proper posts?

Does anybody else have a suggestion? Is there a way to contact the WordPress team to let them know the importer doesn’t work correctly?

There’s nothing wrong with the WordPress importer. I’ve used many times without the slightest problem. The issue probably lies in your exported file or your domain name. What domain name was being used on your wordpress.com site when you carried out the export?

The site I am exporting from is https://megancarroll.wordpress.com/. The site I am importing to is https://mcography.com/test.

Did you use the mcography.com domain name on your wordpress.com site previously?

No. They’ve never been connected at all.

Were all of the images originally uploaded to your wordpress.com site or were they links to images on other sites?

I uploaded them to my wordpress.com blog via the media importer in the dashboard.

Thanks for trying to help me figure this out, by the way.

Just wondering if some of these images were rather large and that’s what’s causing the problem. Do you have access to your site’s error logs?

Do you mean mcography.com? I’m not sure – I’ve never tried to access them. Where would they be located?

I just signed into cPanel and clicked on Error Logs, and there is nothing there. No errors at all…

I meant the images that you trying to import from your wordpress.com site. The images aren’t in the export file themselves. Just their urls. So, for each image, WP trots back to your .com site and tries to grab the full size image and then process for addition to your new site. Image processing is very memory and copy intensive. So, if there are a lot of images and/or they are large, the server can get overloaded and shut the import down.

What you could try doing is cutting the import file down into smaller chunks to see if that helps. Have a look at https://www.gbmini.net/wp/2008/11/splitting_wordpress_export_import_file/

Thanks, esmi. I’ll check that out and report back.

Hmm, it looks like that program is for Windows, and I have a Mac. I will look for a Mac equivalent. However, I’m not sure that file size is the issue since my file is only 779 KB. But I guess it’s worth a shot…
