• I am a bit of an install Newbie. I though with the wealth of info out there, it wouldn’t be too difficult, but alas, I have run into some trouble. I am using Hostway for my current site.. https://www.currentsite.com. I created a subdirectory called devsite.currentsite.com to do a development site to take the place of current antiquated site once developed. Current site uses Dreamweaver and is really bad. Question #1, is that a sound way to do it? I have installed the current WordPress in this folder, edited the wp-config.php file to match DB user name/password/host and security keys. When I go to devsite.currentsite.com, all I get are parse errors. Any thoughts? Thanks all!

  • Hmmm.. Sounds like you might just have some folders in the wrong places. Did you make sure that the config is in the devsite directory and not the original site? I would start there and make sure everything is organized correctly. A lot of times it could just be something very simple as that.

Thanks for the reply Freddie. The wp-config.php file is indeed in the devsite directory. The entire wordpress file group is in there.

I have done a fresh install, and get the same parse error. It is as follows:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/86/56/2925686/web/devsite/wp-includes/pomo/entry.php on line 61

Maddening I tell you. Any other ideas? I’m sure I’m forgetting something really simple.

Check your version of PHP in your cPanel and see if it’s at least version 5.6 this could be your issue.

    Hello There,

Whenever you install wordpress, you should make the changes in config file the time of installation. If you make the change later on, it can show you this error.

I have seen similar errors when user changes the location of WP files in other directory.

It is normally easier just to create a new dev site and install WordPress the usual way. Then just point that dev site IP to the devsite subdomain in the DNS settings for the domain.

    Great to hear.

    Thanks Luke for nice explanation
