I recently switched our hosting from free hosting (provided through our internet provider) to HostGator. The site is up and running, but I am trying to install WordPress in a subdirectory to start building a new site.

I have tried installing WordPress using two of their automated tools, QuickInstall and Fantastico. It says it completed successfully, but when going to the login page, I get a 404 error that the file is not found on the server.

    https://sungraphicsprinting.com
    Trying to install to https://sungraphicsprinting.com/wordpress/

I have deleted the files and databases, and tried to manually install, but keep getting the same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hostgator’s one-click installer is controlled by them, there’s nothing we can do about that.

Have you contacted them about this?

Yes I did contact them. They told me to install manually, but that didn’t seem to work either.

What directory are you installing WordPress into? Does that directory also contain directories named public_html or web?

    The website is currently public_html/sungraphicsprinting.com.
I am trying to install to public_html/wordpress.

Am I doing it in the wrong location perhaps? Do I need to do it inside of sungraphicsprinting.com?

Yeah, if you want it at sungraphicsprinting.com/wordpress/ you should install it in /public_html/sungraphicsprinting.com/wordpress/

At the moment we want to leave our old site up until this new WordPress site is running, at which point I’ll move it to the root.

I’ve had no luck with the quick installer from cPanel, or manually installing myself. I keep getting the following error when installing to public_html/sungraphicsprinting.com/wordpress

    Not Found
The requested URL /wordpress/ was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I see no trace of WordPress files there. Are you sure you placed the files in public_html/sungraphicsprinting.com/wordpress ?

If so, you’ll need to contact HostGator about this.

Yes, it’s definitely there. I’ll try to contact them again.

I spoke to hostgator and he told me he could view it. He could view it through a proxy as well. And yet I’ve cleared all my caches and everything, and still get a 404 error. Does anyone else get the 404 error? I’m at a loss.

I tried it on my phone and it works. Must be something with our network here. Thanks for your help everyone!

Seems to be working here now too, how odd.

    thnks a lot

Sometimes you must wait 48 hours, after change the namesserver. But before you can check your site with your i phone ??

As I was reading this I noticed something odd. If you want your website to show as sungraphicsprinting.com, you install it in “public_html”, not “public_html/sungraphicsprinting.com”

If your WP files are in “public_html/sungraphicsprinting.com” and it shows when you go to sungraphicsprinting.com, consider reading this, because getting that to work requires some changes in the .htaccess file.

If that’s the problem, then the problem would be because of some rewrite rules in the .htaccess file.

As for cache, you can force flush DNS cache by typing the following command in Command Prompt or Terminal.
    Windows: ipconfig /flushdns
OS X Yosemite: sudo discoveryutil mdnsflushcache
OS X 10.7-10.9: sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
OS X 10.6: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

If the reps at GoDaddy said it’s working, then that’s a bit odd, since I cannot view it as well and it had been 48 hours. This is not a problem with DNS propagation.

I apologize for not marking this topic as resolved any sooner.

It turned out the issue was coming from our service provider, who we previously hosted with. I noticed I could view the new site from any other computer or phone not connected to our network, and it worked. Once they cleared it, everything worked fine.
