Greetings,

I’m at an internet provider where we have a strict firewall that limits who can log in via ftp. Our customers have been unable to do online upgrades since we tightened our firewall.

Could I have the www.ads-software.com upgrading source IP Numbers or host names to put into our firewall whitelist so that my customers can do upgrades of wordpress and its plugins easily? I’m told that I can’t use wildcard ip numbers, so hoping to get the current full IP Numbers or host names. If you need to change them later, I understand that I’ll need to ask or look them up again.

Many thanks. Sorry if this has been answered a million times. I don’t seem to know the right search terms to use, can’t find it.

www.ads-software.com does not access your site via FTP. You do not need to open any IPs for it.

If your WP site is asking for FTP info, it’s because the file ownerships or permissions are incorrect.

If WordPress keeps asking you for FTP credentials see https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Automatic_Update and https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Editing_wp-config.php#WordPress_Upgrade_Constants as well as https://v007.me/4 for forcing direct file system writes

At the site you pointed to, sterndata, https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Automatic_Update , I see that it says we should have all files owned by the web server, which seems like a security risk for me, and that document also says that it is a security risk. That also points to this helpful info: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Configuring_Automatic_Background_Updates . I’ll need to check these permission configuration values and maybe at least change permission for themes and plugins to allow updates of them through the server.

The second and 3rd documents you mention about upgrading constants tells about enabling ftp updates and entering ftp credentials ahead of time, which does not help if our firewall is shutting ftp out due to not having wordpress in its ftp whitelist.

Your link, kmessinger, has the address of the main host domain, www.ads-software.com. In a quick search through the wordpress code, I see that this is the host referenced for about anything needed from wordpress, as well as api.www.ads-software.com. I should have thought of looking through the code before.

www.ads-software.com DOES NOT ftp into your site. When WP wants an update, it uses curl to reach out to downloads.www.ads-software.com.
