WordPress not recognizing default editor settings

I have installed the Classic Editor Plugin and have been using this editor as my default for some time. However I have finally become familiar enough with the gutenberg editor that I decided to change my writing settings so that the block editor was my default rather than classic. However, even though I have confirmed that my settings have been changed, new posts still start with the Classic editor. I do not currently wish to disable the plugin altogether, I just do not want it to be the default editor. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks
