• I’m restoring WordPress after a hacker trashed my old site. I’ve got it mostly set up and working again, but for some reason I am no longer getting email notifications whenever a user posts in the Discussion thread. I’ve installed ‘Configure SMTP’ and used it to send me a test email (which I received). I’ve also put my home email address in the admins’ ‘Settings/Email Address’ field. However, WP is not sending me emails related to user posting activities.

    Am I missing something?

Have you read this warning at the top of the page of that plugin which reads?

This plugin hasn’t been updated in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.

It’s possible this plugin is not compatible with WP.

I’ve also tried SMTP mailer and a few other SMTP plugins. I’m still not receiving any email.

    – Also, ask your hosting provider what’s going on (e.g., if any of their SMTP filtering rules have changed recently; If for some reason your notification emails have been simply queued. etc.)
    – Also ask them if you need to setup SMTP. If you do, then you can use a plugin for it, for example: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/postman-smtp/

Well, the test emails are coming through fine and I had no problems receiving any notifications before I had to reinstall WordPress. I’m also using the same configuration I’ve used before to contact my SMTP server.

I think this is more an issue of WP for some reason not sending the emails in the first place. Maybe I have to enable that somewhere?

If you have attempted ALL troubleshooting steps suggested above, and they did not help, them try MANUALLY updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Please read the Manual Update directions first.
