I uploaded a new image to my media library. It shows it as a grey square instead of the picture of a black box. Also, when I try to use the old photo as a background or a header in any of my themes they don’t change to that picture as a background or header. The screen just flashes like it wants to do something but it doesn’t. It just stays as it was. When I copy the address link to the picture it says that it can’t be found. I have even deleted the new file and uploaded it again several times. I have even deactivated all of my plugins. That doesn’t help. The settings under media are pointing to the correct folder that has 7.5.5 permissions. I am running WP 5.0.2.

  • There are several things you can try to identify the problem; I suggest:

    • It may sound dumb, but check if the files are there in the uploads folder…
    • Check error logs on your server
    • Try renaming your .htaccess, then try uploading again (don’t forget to rename it back!)
    • Try without browser extensions (in Chrome it would be an incognito session)
    • Check your wp-config.php for a custom uploads path (like define(‘UPLOADS’, ‘/some/custom/path’); )
    • Test without plugins AND with a standard theme; you can use the Health Check plugin for that, it has a handy Troubleshooting mode.

Let us know if anything of that works for you.

Thanks! I was able to disable a plugin that was preventing me from seeing the picture. I do also have to upload the picture to my uploads folder. But it works now.
