WordPress novice – changing file permissions
-
Hi there, As I’ve mentioned I am a complete wordpress novice so apologies if I am asking stupid questions!
I am having problems with uploading media and updating plugins. For media I get either the message ‘Is its parent directory writable by the server?’ or simply
‘“Paper_Crown_Hat_2.jpg” has failed to upload. The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads.’
When trying to update plugins it says ‘An error occurred while updating Akismet: Could not create directory.’
After looking at other forums for each thing individually it keeps saying change file permissions to 777, but I couldn’t see a way to do this- I then saw that I needed to have a FTP client to do this so I downloaded filezilla but am having trouble with how to work it- I don’t know what host/username/password to enter, on other posts it says I should have been ‘given one’- is this simply the domain name for my wordpress website, my username for the website, and my password for the website?
So sorry if this makes no sense/ is the most ignorant post ever, I’m just coming in blind to an old website with EXTREMELY limited wordpress experience and have no information but the login details.
Any help much appreciated.
