• Hello! I’m new here (as well as to web building, so I get confused quite easily, heh). I’ve searched the forum, but couldn’t really make heads or tales of the explanations for the question I have…

I’m trying to create a site with two blogs — I need a blog on the main page to serve as a site update log and the other blog for personal use (probably hosted under a subdomain). The main blog will probably not need to support comments.

So I guess what I want to know is: Can I create a site with one WordPress blog on the main page and a link that leads to another blog on the site? I’m also using DreamHost, which supports “one-click” installation of WordPress. If it’s possible to have these two seperate blogs, would I need to install WordPress manually?

Any insight and help would be appreciated.

  • You should be able to set up a subdomain of your main blog. Then set up your main blog on your domain (using one-click) and another installation of WordPress (using one-click) on your subdomain.

I’ve got just such a setup at purrz.com. It’s running WP (using one-click) and several subdomains of it are running their own separate installs of WP with their own mail, etc.

Be VERY CAREFUL in your Dreamhost control panel. I have several domains and subdomains hosted there and it seems to default to one particular one. I was trying to do a one-click install recently and didn’t hit the dropdown box for the subdomain and hosed the domain that was the default display name in the dropdown box!!

First, go ahead and set up your subdomain because it takes awhile for it to “go live.”
You will need to set up separate databases for each blog. Set up the one on your main domain first. Then when the subdomain resolves, set up a database there as well. Meanwhile, install WP on yourdomain.com first. THEN set up WP on subdomain.yourdomain.com. Should be fine.

Thanks very much for your help! I’d considered just going in blind, but decided asking for some guidance and assurances from those more knowledgable might be the prudent thing to do.=D I’ll get started right away. =D Thanks again!

The Dreamhost control panel takes some getting used to, especially if you became used to cPanel. If you need help, just email me at joni.mueller (at) gmail (dot) com!
