Before I take the plunge with www.ads-software.com (I’m a complete newbie), does anyone know if WordPress can enable writing instruction: writing is taught and submitted by a single student, I can respond to the submission with comments, and also show the student the marks I made on that writing and why?

Really struggling to find the best solution for establishing a simple online writing instruction site based around close, one-on-one interaction and exchange. Almost tempted to enroll myself at some of the big for-profit schools or one of the few MOOC writing courses, just to see how it’s done– but I think they use Blackboard or other proprietary software.

Should I just hire a web developer instead of trying to learn WordPress?

It’s also hard to search this topic, because it always thinks I’m asking about instruction/tutoring for learning WordPress, not using WordPress for teaching writing.

Opinions from anyone even remotely involved with using WordPress for online ed or writing would be appreciated.

I’m sure you could make something work in WordPress – in any number of ways, but there’s a learning curve if you’re brand new, so that might be a consideration. Maybe a customized buddypress site (it makes forums like this one).

I have not used it, but there’s a new commercial (paid) theme out for online learning – so you could look at that:

You might also want to look into Moodle – it’s not WordPress, but open-source and supposed to be very good:

Sounds like you need a document management system, which may or may not mean you need a CMS. My initial thought is using something like a SharePoint list with attachments, not WP.

Thanks, all, for the excellent suggestions . . . I’ll check out these links.

One issue with Moodle: I don’t think you can have a branded skin or overlay, but that may have changed.
