WordPress site dead after 5.0.2 install (possibly?)
-
To start with, I say “possibly” because it may have started with issues between the last updated I posted and when I updated to 5.0.2 but I only noticed it after the WP update.
My last update was to a widget around November 13th. Sometime around December 27th or so, I logged in to post an update and saw that there was a WordPress update so I ran the update. I did have an Updraft Plus run as scheduled on December 14th (as scheduled, every two weeks) but there haven’t been any since, so this seems to fit with the whole site breaking with the 5.0.2 update.
I tried to update extensions after the 5.0.2 update but they were timing out. I attributed it to the poor WiFi I was on, but they did eventually update.
After that though, I wasn’t able to post any updates (widgets or posts).
I receive the following errors usually, when I click on anything in the Dashboard:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at foreverdarknessca.fatcowmysql.com. This could mean your host’s database server is down.I’ve reviewed and confirmed my database information and it’s fine. I’ve also contacted my host and they say that the database is fine (although they did try to tell me that I was going over the 75,000 queries per hour that was allowed, but that was incorrect). If I reload, I sometimes get the same error, sometimes I finally get the page I was trying to get. The main site will also go down.
No attempts to post/update will go through. It will either attempt to save and look like it’s saving, but when I update the site, the save didn’t go through.
The database doesn’t seem to be the issue, I’m manually updating it with queries in a query window without issue to test it… it’s updating quickly and fast and not timing out.
When I tried speaking with tech support at my host, they finally said that there was an known issue with WordPress 5.0.2 and I should downgrade my version of WordPress. I backed up my site and used the downgrade extension to rollback to 4.9.8 which was the last version I was running. I’m still getting the above error (Error connecting to the database).
I’ve shut off all extensions and it still throws the error.
I’ve attempted to roll back to my backups in Updraft Plus, but these are throwing errors due to being unable to maintain any consistent connection (from what I can tell, there’s just a bad connection in general, not just to the database).
When I try to restore from Updraft Plus, I receive the following errors:
updraft_send_command: error: UpdraftPlus: could not parse the JSON (502)or:
updraft_send_command: error: error ()Google seems to indicate that the first one is a timeout error.
My host isn’t being much help so I’m suspecting that this is mostly a WordPress issue at this point. Any ideas on what I should do next? My extensions are all disabled right now (other then Updraft as I was trying to reload it, but I was still getting the issue with it disabled), I’m rolled back to 4.9.8 (although it auto-updated to 4.9.9), and everything is still not working. I’m tempted to reinstall the software from scratch, but I’m not sure how to re-install my custom layout from the backups that I have or if that’ll just reintroduce the issue or if I should manually paste everything back in once I reinstall WordPress? Unless someone has a fix recommendation?
