WordPress site for decentralized groups

  • I’m brainstorming and researching a solution for an non-profit. Our idea is to develop local meetings where youth can learn more about different career fields and do small group interviews, which can be recorded and posted online for others to access. The format for the organization is to allow local units to pop up anywhere someone is willing to form one.

    To that end, I’m considering WPMU to offer each group their own site. But I don’t know the terminology well enough to work through how well this would work or if there are better methods. If anyone can point me in the direction of sites already doing this, resources, or help me better describe what I’m attempting, it is appreciated.

    The best example of this is WordPress.com itself, which runs thousands of websites/blogs in one multi-site install.

    Edublogs.org is also a good example. You may even want to signup and see for yourself if that gets close to what you are trying to do.

    Edublogs was build using a few plugins from WPMUDEV, which is a premium subscription but it may be worth exploring to see if that is a solution that you want. There is a good post called “How To Build Your Own Edublogs.org Site in 7 Easy Steps” that you may find interesting.

    You may also consider instead of creating a multi-site solution, to create groups and forums using BuddyPress and BBPress. Both plugins are owned by Automattic and the implementation is pretty smooth. In fact these two plugins work together if need be.

    Thanks, Armando. I hadn’t thought of Edublogs or even heard fo WPMUDEV, I’ll look those over. I am familiar with BuddyPress and BBPress and am considering those for a different project, so I’ll look them over as well.
