WordPress Site Occasionally "hanging up"

  • Hello,

    We have been experiencing slow website issues now for about a week. We believe it is due to a server that has a lot of the disk drive. We have been making a lot of changes but now the site is occasionally “hanging up” (just keeps trying to load) and in some cases throwing an Internal Server Error.

    Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? Any logs to look at? It is running on a Windows Server (IIS I believe)

    Just to add: We have pretty much fixed the website being slow. (It was initially slow to load pages and the admin login). We have virtually fixed all of that. Now it will just randomly hang up and you can’t load any part of the site and we have on a couple of occasions seen the Internal Server Error. Then the website will simply return to normal.

    Any thoughts?

  • If you check the IIS logs (event viewer) do you get any detail regarding the Internal Server Errors?

    Hi Shawn,

    Thanks for responding. My host who runs the server says the internal server error occurs when the process restarts.

    Unfortunately that doesn’t tell me much. There’s is probably (or hopefully) more detailed information in the log that might point us in the right direction.

    I can’ help any further based on the facts presented. Would need someone to chime in who’s experienced a similar problem in the past.

    Hi Shawn,

    I understand. I have sent another email and hope to have some new details soon. We have been raising the memory limit but finally raised the memory limit in wp-config. It was at 96MB but we raised it to 256MB. My host seems to think this was related to a Memory Issue.

    If he finds anything in the log, I will report back.

    Hi Shawn,

    I have some more information for you.

    My host stated that when I see the 500 Error, this is when he intervenes. Meaning this is when he restarts the server. During these problems, the website is actually hanging up … meaning won’t load. Won’t load the admin or the site at all.

    My host says that he feels like a plugin may be in an infinite loop. But we have no way for knowing for sure.

    Any thoughts?
