yeah you can but it is not that obvious when you are new at this. i found a theme by destyle that works well at a normal site. Also turn off comments and posted by on your pages that you create. There is a bit of info around on ways to make use wp as a regular site bit it can be hard to find. studiopress and ithemes have some themes which could work quite well but i think they cost a little bit. I would recommend trying out a few different free themes and seeing what you can do with them before buying a theme tho.
