• I think it is time to plan the moving of my blogs off WordPress because there just isn’t the support needed.

I have had a problem with Akismet not working for about 7 days now and as a result I am drowning in blog spam. No answer from Akismet, no solution from the WordPress forum.

I think the only answer might be a paid version of WordPress, one where you could expect some response to urgent questions (which you rarely–in my experience–get on https://www.ads-software.com/support).

I paid to license the Thesis theme and in my experience they give great support on their forums. But it seems like anything challenging on WordPress support is left alone. The problem I face is probably something to do with file and directory permissions on my virtual private server…much too complex for help it seems.

Alas, free is not always as good as it sounds and I am now looking for a blogging system that can support me when things are not working.

    Stephen

  • I wish you luck with your search. I guess you could pay a fairly hefty fee for a supported version of MovableType, but then you’d still be lucky to get them to help you set up your VPS, and you’d have all the fun of Perl.

The issue with your auto-upgrading does sound like a file permissions issue. It would generally happen if WP cannot manipulate the file system. Auto-update not working is an issue, but doesn’t prevent you from fetching a copy of a plugin manually and uploading it through FTP the old-fashioned way to make sure it’s there and installed correctly.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I was thinking the same;paid version for help. I thought my question was simple enough on how to use roman numerals 1-20 for categorizing different topics. I am new so I’m sure the answer is somewhere but where?
