So, I’ve been tasked with training users on how to use their WordPress site. They seem to want ‘user-level’ training, but added that they would also like to learn more things to do.

One of these things is updating their WP site. However, I’m seeing that their site dashboard says that the latest WP security updates will be applied automatically. Does this mean that they wouldn’t need to update their WP versions too?

  • By default, WordPress is configured to apply minor updates automatically (eg. 4.8.2 -> 4.8.3) but major updates still need to be triggered manually in most cases (e.g. 4.8.x -> 4.9). The only exception to this (that I know of) is when WordPress has been installed via a hosts’ 1-click installer which may have offered an option to automatically apply major updates also.

So I suppose your first step would be to identify if a 1-click installer was used in the initial installation of WordPress and, if “yes”, how that installer was.is configured.

Thanks, @esmi, this is likely a 1-click setup. I noticed that WordPress was updated automatically from 4.7 to current 4.8, and nobody there seems to know how that was done.
