• I have noticed that all my WP sites no longer complete updates as they used to. Whenever plugins or themes require updating and the update is initiated – the admin page times-out / stops responding before the operation is complete.

In spite of this it appears that the updates have been applied. When re-visiting the updates area the updates are no longer pending.

It does not happen with translation updates – which give a completion confirmation message.

I’ve tried running updates with 2015 theme and all plugins disabled and no cache – same behaviour.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is this a bug in the latest version of WP? I wasn’t experiencing this before.

  • Hi, could you try enabling debug and debug log? After enabling debug try updating a plugin and check to see if you find any errors in wp-content/debug.log.

You might need to increase max_execution_time in php.ini.

    Hi

Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing in the debug log and max_execution_time is at 300.

Hi, I’m wondering if this could be a local thing. Have you tried with different computers or browsers? Could you try doubling max_execution_time just to test? What is your PHP memory limit set to?

    Hi

I have tried this on Chrome, Safari, Mozilla and Edge. Also tried on PC and Mac.
I doubled the max_execution_time to 600. The PHP memory limit is set to 128. It was at 256 but I lowered it as I feel that is not necessary.

Still the same behaviour. I’ve also tested with different WP sites on the same VPS and they all have the same issue, so I guess it’s something to do with the server config.

Hi, what PHP version are you using? Have you tried with PHP 7? There’s not much else I can suggest other than to check server error logs or create a backup and do a full reinstall of the server, sorry.

    Hi

I’m using PHP 7 but have tested on PHP 5. I’m also using LiteSpeed – but have tested with Apache.

Re-installing the server seems a bit extreme considering all other websites and scripts function fine. The WordPress theme and plugin updates do complete – but the lack of completion message is worrying. I guess I will just have to live with it and hope the next WP version update fixes it.

    Actually I just noticed:

If I click on ‘view details’ link next to the plugin / theme update – then click the update button in the pop-up window, it completes normally.

It’s only when I use the admin / dashboard / updates list view and check the boxes or ‘select all’ – then click update that the interface seems to fail. So I guess that would indicate a wordpress bug.

Did you even find a solution to this? I have the same issue and I’m running a Lightspeed shared server as well. It’s been happening for months. I was hoping that it would be resolved with the upgrade to WordPress 5, but it has not.

I’ve tried searching for an answer for this for months, and can’t find anyone or anything that helps the situation. Any information that you could provide would be extremely helpful.

    It’s very frustrating.

    Hi @ccandg

Yesterday I updated LiteSpeed from 5.3.3 to 5.3.4 (build 7) and now plugin updates complete as expected with confirmation.

I have not updated WP to 5 yet.

Uggh. I was really hopeful this time…

… I just upgraded my server to the latest build of lightspeed (5.3.4), but the update status still is not showing. Did you do anything else besides update the build?

Hello? Any update? I would really like to resolve this issue..

    Hi

I have actually found the bug persists on some other WP accounts on the same server. They are all running PHP 7.0. I cannot find any reason why plugin updates complete with confirmation on one account – but not the others. It’s a total mystery. I don’t believe this is related to LiteSpeed as the same situation occurs when switching to Apache. Maybe it’s something to do with CENT OS? Or Cpanel? Some kind of server level caching?

Anyway… please bear in mind that no errors are being generated and (although the update page seems to timeout and does not give a confirmation) the plugins ARE successfully updated, so it’s really not worth worrying about.

Yeah, I agree.. it does seems to update normally even though you can’t see the completion status. Although, when I have 6 tabs open updating the 50+ wordpress installations I now how, I’m worried that I may accidentally navigate away before it completes. The only way that I know that it’s done is by checking the favicon for the spinning circle (in Chrome).

I find it strange that no one else is experiencing this and that’s it quite random. Some sites on the same shared server running the same theme update normally, but others don’t. It’s been plaguing me for months. UGH.

Let me know if you discover anything additional.

    Hi @ccandg

I was just wondering if you ever found a solution to this? I am running PHP 7.2 and all my WP installs fail to give plugin update completion message.

I never found a solution. It still happens intermittently. I don’t know why it’s happening.
