• Hello,

I am an one of developer of the site.
We have very old wordpress version. We want to upgrade the plugins & WP version to the latest (6.0). We are using Sage starter theme, most of customization, so not using the direct upgrade click in dashboard, Proceeding with manual upgrade.

    For that, having some queries,
    1. I am planning to upgrade WP by version by version like 5.4 to 5.5 & then 5.5 to 5.6 and so on. Is this a correct way?
    2. All plugins are also in older versions so what to need to do firs plugin upgrade or wordpress upgrade?
    3. If plugin upgrade is good before upgrade the WP -> may i update all plugin to the latest version in one shot? or WP & plugin upgrdae parallelly?
    4. When i upgrade 5.5 to 5.6 , Having one critical issue in site health
    that is, https://prnt.sc/GvZA52giBMbh
What is the meaning & how to resolve this?
    5. May i proceed 5.7 upgrade with this critical issue???
    6. Suddenly all emails are going to spam folder in one site, but the same smptp details used in other site, the emails are gone to inbox only… What is the reason?
    7. Having PHP version 7.3, want to upgrade to 8.1 . SO what is the best approach to update php either first or after WP 6 version?

Kindly anyone can answer for the above questions if u know.

    Thanks.

    Hiya,

You should be able to upgrade directly to 6.0, WordPress will run code to handle any changes needed to databases and similar for any version between that.

I would update plugins on your site first, then update WordPress (note that some plugins may not show updates before the WP version matches, so do all plugins, then WordPress, then look for plugin updates again).

The warning from Site Health is coming form a plugin or theme, hopefully they’ve updated their code once you update, if not, you should follow the normal troubleshooting steps to identify which plugin it is and reach out to them to get it fixed.

You definitely want to finish updating WordPress and any plugins or themes before you switch PHP versions, to ensure the best possible compatibility.

Please do any major upgrades on a staging site, and remember to make backups of your live site before you do the upgrades there just to be on the safe side.

I skipped some questions, because this is just too many questions in one massive topic, and that will make it near impossible to reliably answer any followup questions if they arise, so please feel free to make new topics for individual issues ?? I’ve focused on the upgrade paths in this one.

I would upgrade to PHP 7.4 before jumping to 8.1. Also be careful because there are still plugins that do not support PHP 8.x.

    Make sure you TEST thoroughly.
