• Hello – I have a new client that would like to change hosting companies. The site is running 2.9.2 and it’s time for an upgrade. The site is pretty custom though…I don’t see evidence that the theme is being supported and the site itself is pretty custom in terms of design. Other than FTP, I don’t have access to the current server as it is with a reseller. I’ll assume he’ll provide me the DB.

    1. If I begin new hosting and move the site, will it function on 2.9.2 on the new server, assuming that the upgrades in PHP would allow this version of WordPress to function? Or should I perform the upgrade first on the current server, and move to the new?

    2. Should I do an incremental upgrade? Or maybe just jump to 3.0 first, manually? Then to 3.6 automatically?

    3. Any special considerations for theme compatibility, or for the custom site? What sorts of massive changes happened that might prevent this site from working as is, after upgrade.

Any insight would be great! Thanks so much!

  • 1. Leaving the site running WordPress 2.9.2 would be very unwise.

    2. As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details.

Thank you for the prompt response. I am definitely planning on upgrading, but I guess I am wondering if I should upgrade on the old server, then move it. Or move it and upgrade. I can keep the site live on the old server while I perform the upgrades. Just not sure if the new hosting will allow the older site to work in order to upgrade.

I would carry out the upgrade on the old server asap.
