• I have a problem with my newly installed wordpress instance. I have created a droplet on DigitalOcean, this is basically a bit of server space.

I have forwarded my domain (GoDaddy) using DNS/Nameserver settings over to the droplet I created.

When I go to the homepage, everything looks fine, but when I look in the source code, I see the IP address and not the domain.

There are two settings in WordPress in the general settings –

    1) WordPress Address (URL)
    2) Site Address (URL)

I am not sure which one to change, I had the same setup yesterday, I changed both urls to the domain which I registered, this causes my /wp-admin page to go into a redirect loop, it was early stages of the site build so I just deleted everything and started again.

I want to change one of these URLs but ensure that nothing is messed up in the process.

    Thanks

    Darkxide

Can you point your domain to that IP (ask the folks over at Digital Ocean about this) and then get a normal .html file or image in the same directory to load?

Basically, let’s get the domain working first.

Don’t worry, if you lock yourself out of your blog, you can follow this guide to change the settings in the Database: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_The_Site_URL#Changing_the_URL_directly_in_the_database

    Hey James,

Thanks for your reply. I see what you mean, the domain is definitely working.

I go to the site through the domain, but when I look in the source code I see the IP not the domain. I thought this was linked to the 2 URL types in the general settings?

Everything is set up perfectly, it’s just that the hosting/wordpress doesn’t acknowledge the domain, if that makes sense?

    Thanks,

    Darkxide

Can you give us a link to the site with the problem?

    Hey James,

    sure, it’s https://droidvoice.com/

    thanks

Hm, I see what you mean, and the domains are for sure the two URLs at Settings -> General?

Are the two URLs there black and editable, or greyed-out and uneditable?

    Thread Starter darkxide

    (@darkxide)

Yeah they are editable and contain the IP address which you see in the source code.

I had the same installation prior to this one, I went into settings > general and change both fields from IP to the domain.

I then went to /wp-admin on the domain and it would do a redirect loop.

This tells me that only one of the addresses in the URL field should be changed, which one should it be?

    Thanks

    (@macmanx)

Actually, both should be the domain.

If you enter into a redirect loop, it’s possible the domain/DNS are not configured correctly, or you have a redirect elsewhere like in a .htaccess file.

    Hey,

Domain is with GoDaddy – the nameservers are pointing to DigitalOcean.

Therefore, I do not have access to the DNS settings anymore.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Now that the domains are pointed to DigitalOcean’s NS, you’ll be controlling how they are routed via DigitalOcean.

You’ll need to ask they support for help with that.

    Hey James,

Sure, I will get in contact with them, thanks for your help!

After getting in contact with them and resolving the problem, something else has cropped up.

It seems as though my site is being treated as two according to whether or not I add a www. or not to the start of the domain.

The preferred version is with the www. – how would I get WordPress to treat them both the same?

    Thanks

Check with the Digital Ocean folks again, you should be able to force www at the server level. Just make sure you also include the www in the two URLs at Settings -> General first.
