WordPress version 4.9 is released but most of the companies that are required and useful for a website version 4.9 plugins is not yet released. So the version 4.9 install is not a risk for the website?

It’s not a risk. Many plugin authors just don’t bother to update the “tested with” stuff.

This question is not about the installation of WordPress. Plugin authors are not REQUIRED to update their plugins every time there is a new release. Nor do they always remember to update the plugin page as to what version their plugin works with.

It is a risk to update site and you should ALWAYS backup your site and Database before updating WordPress. You should use that backup to test all of your plugins AND THEME to assure compatibility. If there is an issue you should contact the plugin or theme developer on their individual support page.

Sometimes it takes the developers some time to catch up and get a compatible release out. I’d say upgrading to 4.9 is safe for your plugins, as well as most minor releases – just be mindful if you’re ever upgrading to a major version (such as 5.0), as core functions may be deprecated and cause problems with your incompatible plugins.

A new version of WordPress can be more of a problem for older themes not made by WordPress, especially, if not recently updated. This can be a bigger problem to fix than handling conflicts with plugins.
