• Hello everybody!

Here is a question I originally posted in the WooCommerce-Forums – but as it turns out, this seems to be a problem of the WordPress Core functions and not of WooCommerce, as WooCommerce uses the official Category Functions of WordPress.

Anyway, here is our problem: we created a website with a woocommerce shop in it and more than 4.000 (nested!) product categories.

Turns out the Admin Area concerning the Categories becomes REALLY slow. Changing a product’s price takes 20 Seconds to save. Changing the order of the categories takes up to 10 Minutes to save. Working with the Category-Backend ist a nightmare with such slow loading times (and we are on a dedicated high performance server system).

At least we managed to keep loading times for our visitors in the Front-End at bay (with lots of Caching) – but working in the Back-End takes virtually forever.

Seems like WordPress is not really effective with lots of categories (even nested categories). Is there a work around to speed up the category-queries?

Problem is that we need to design an even bigger onlineshop with even more categories – and now I’m afraid WordPress will not be able to handle this.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Kind regards, Michael

  • Hi Michael,

Have you contacted your hosting provider to see if they can pinpoint what the bottleneck is? Are you even hitting your hosting account CPU, memory limits when saving this? Shared hosting providers running cloudlinux have a set resource limit that will result in pages slowing down when you reach the cap.
