• In general, i’ve been really enjoying my venture into WordPress. With some creativity I have found you can do almost anything, although some things feel a little jerry-riggish.

Anyways, I was wondering from some of the experts out there if there are certain kinds of sites you would NEVER or shouldn’t use WordPress for. I’ve read that Joomla and Drupal has better security and might be better for larger corporate sites.

    Opinions?

I’ve been reading through the forum on people’s thoughts. I am not wondering if for example Joomla or Drupal is better. I realize they are just different.

I’m more wondering if there are any “no, no” situations where WordPress would not be good to use. I’m imagining that you wouldn’t strive to make the next Youtube using WordPress..: ) .

Might be easier if you posted what you’d like to use WP for rather than leaving it so open ended.

IMO, WP can be used for almost any type of site. It’s the depth that I’d be concerned with. For example, you can build a pretty decent ecommerce site but you’d have a real tough time getting it to be as robust as most extremely successful sites.

    Opinions?

You can do anything you like with WordPress. Sometimes the expectations of new users to WordPress ( as well as any other platforms ) seems to be that it is going to be the be-all and end-all of “point and click” solutions. This just is not a realistic expectation of any web application. However, what you can do with it, is limited only by the effort and imagination you put into it, and the level of experience and patience you bring to web development in general.

Advising you in which situations WordPress should “not” be used, is just folly. Joomla and Drupal are simply different. As are 20 other platforms I can name. You get out of it, what you invest in it.

Competent development and expertise yields on average, superior results. Conversely, point and click mindsets geared toward accomplishing everything through the use of a “plugin”, or a “mod” or a “widget”, or “module” will simply yield the results of the work of the developers who created those items.

As far as Joomla or Drupal having better security? 6 of one, half dozen of the other. They all have a history of issues. That will never change. Bad guys will always want to break your nice things for you.

One thing I can say for certain from my own experience, is that I have never seen a community come together as quickly and as consistently, as WordPress does when there is a potential issue. Updates and patches ( in my experience ) are swift and highly visible, and communication and publication has always been outstanding.

    </my opinion>

    Hey guys,

    I appreciate both your opinions

    Thanks!

I love simple machine forum, but find due to the popularity of wordpress there are a lot more plugins than smf mods out there. I believe, due to all these plugins available, you will not find too many better solutions in general than wp

    Rick

i have tried jumla and drupal before and they looked a lot more technical, also i could not find enough help about them. So, overall when i compare them, or just in general, when i compare other cms to wordpress, i find the following things, this is just a personal experience/opinion:

spam – on wordpress with akismet/bad-behaviour/recaptcha etc. spam is almost none. while i have faced spam problems on every other cms that i have used.

speed – there are plenty of ways to speed up wordpress, but other cms always lack speed somehow or the other, and i could not find any way to speed them up anyway.

usability – wordpress is easy to use, but then perhaps am so used to it that it looks easy.

features – wordpress has plenty of features, and none other cms can truly match it in features.

plugins and templates – seriously and i guess you would agree too, that wordpress has the most free/paid plugins and templates available. there is a plugin for almost anything that you want to do.

support – so many people use wordpress that they are so friendly, that support is never an issue. just look at this forum, how easily the problems are solved with so many people helping each other. and yes, i had a lot of support issues with other cms and some of those experiences were really horrible.

the list can go on and on…
    cheers,

    Thanks, again.

Yeah, I am finding the forums quite successful and well traversed with quality people.

Even when I ask a question that is questionable, people are polite and keep the slamming to a minimal : ). Always a good thing!

Sometimes I try to ask questions on Craigslist and even when I ask a reasonable question, the jokers love chiming in.
