When trying to install most plugins, wordpress does the following:

    Image of problem.

It gets to the first line of install, then just stops page loading altogether, occasionally i’ll get a .tmp file of the plugin in the plugins folder. Also, some plugins just fail to activate, and bring up fatal error messages.

I’ve never had any trouble like this before with wordpress. I’ve already entirely deleted wordpress from the server, downloaded the latest version (again), created a new database, and installed from scratch, and still have the same problem.

The site is on 1and1 hosting, i don’t know if anybody has had any problems with them before? Considering the plugins all work on other wordpress setups i have, i can only point the problem to being with the server provider, which doesn’t really make sense to me.

If anybody can help diagnose, or know what the potential issue is, it would be extremely helpful.

    Thanks.

  • Try adding AddType x-mapp-php5 .php to your .htaccess file in your root directory.

    Awesome. Worked straight away.

Just so i understand the problem, what does adding that line to .htaccess actually do?

    Thanks.

It is forcing all .php files to be loaded via PHP 5 … in a basic sense. 1and1 I believe supports both PHP4 and PHP5.
