WordPress, Xampp, and Ubuntu – Oh, my!
-
I installed Ubuntu, Xampp, then WordPress on a PC to test the environment. I have to say it’s fun, however, some tutorials regarding said environment are tl;dr and so I’ve come here ?? This is a first for me so any references are welcomed.
Question #1 – I installed WP in my
/home/wordpress/
directory with a soft link from/opt/lampp/htdocs/wordpress/
thinking I was going to have a set of default permissions that allow me to update via the Dashboard. I was wrong.Example: When I go to update Akismet, the Dashboard prompts me to enter my FTP information.
Connection Information
To perform the requested action, WordPress needs to access your web server. Please enter your FTP credentials to proceed. If you do not remember your credentials, you should contact your web host. What permissions am I lacking or what step am I missing to enable?
Question #2 – What are some recommended practices, resources, or apps that enhance a WordPress development environment using Ubuntu?
Question #3 – What is NOT recommended when running this environment?
Thank-you!
