I currently have six or seven blogs that I am merging into one, but I’d like to keep all the posts separate and organised as they currently are via a category structure.

So each blog has its own top level category. I’d like to simply import all posts and sub categories from the old blog into its new category.

The problem I am finding is that WP is trying to be too clever with the import. Two blogs both have categories ‘News” which should be Blog A > News and Blog B > News, but on import these all get merged to Blog A > News. Editing the XML and changing the slug/name of the categories to something unique and changing their parent doesn’t work because each individual post has the same data stored against it, which overrides any changes at the top of the XML.

Is there a simpler way to do this, maybe a plugin?

  • What about changing the seven old blog’s categories first, then redo the export and import processes?

Problem is I need to leave those blogs live whilst I do the migration and I’d have to change all the category titles to something unique, rather than just the slugs.

Then install WordPress on your local machine, use the Import->WordPress for each of your seven blogs. After the first blog is installed, fix the categories, then do the 2nd blog’s import, fix the categories, and so on to finish the seven imports.

Then do export from your locally installed blog and import that into the new blog.

    Easier said than done though…

Thank you, the idea of using a third blog as an intermediary step worked. It proved a very slow process but everything is working correctly now.

For anyone having problems with importing into an existing blog using a wordpress XML I should point out that you need to disable the WP-Cache plugin beforehand! This was massively screwing up my imports (creating duplicate categories, not assigning posts to correct categories, not loading in all posts on import, very slow) and it took a while for me to realize the cause.
