• Hi,
I’m trying to use wordpress and buddypress on a site hosted by 123reg.co.uk
The site only offers me version 3.2 but i need version 3.3 to enable me to use buddypress.
when i try to update wordpress via the “update” button, it says it’s installing but nothing happens.
Has anyone else had this issue? Or can anyone recommend a workaround?

    thanks
    iain

  • Hello,

My name is Nerys and I work for 123-Reg.

If you wish to upgrade your WordPress package you will to ensure that you are logging into your WordPress admin panel, which you can do from your Web Hosting management section in your 123-Reg control panel, and using the option within there to upgrade to version 3.3.

If this is causing you any issues or errors, please do use the 123-Reg Support site to raise a support ticket and one of our hosting support team will be able to look into this further for you.

    Thanks,

    Nerys

I am trying to get help from 123reg but all i’ve had so far is automated messages offering assistance with unrelated topics and someone advising me to do exactly what i’ve been doing (the process you reiterate above) and it doesnt work ??

Also, Today when i click the “administrative interface” button from my account, the page doesn’t load.

Nerys, could you please assist me with what to try next. Nobody is replying at 123 and i am unable to do any work on my site.

I would very much appreciate your help

    thanks

    Downloading update from https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-3.3.1-no-content.zip…

    Unpacking the update…

    Unpacking the update…

The link to my wordpress control panel is now functioning.
Regards the update – I see the above and then nothing happens. Does that give any clues as to what the issue is?

    Hello,

Do you have a ticket ID number or your domain name so I can have this looked into further for you?

    Thanks,

    Nerys

After 2 days of being messed around, I have finally received some honesty from one of your colleagues.

There is no way to update wordpress to 3.3 on 123reg.co.uk because “we don’t use an out-of-the-box version”

In other words, If you need 3.3 to use vital plug-ins, it’s just tough luck. Whenever WordPress update their program, 123reg customers are stuck in limbo until you decide to update your app version of it.

apologies if i sound annoyed but 2 days of lies and/or obfuscation will do that to a person.

I do still require your advice though –
How do i request a refund and do you know of a hosting site that does use up-to-date versions of software?
    thanks

    Hello,

All cancellations for hosting packages are processed by our Customer Relations team, who you can contact on 0845 859 0023 Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:30pm.

Unfortunately I am not able to offer advice relating to which services are provided by other hosting companies as we are not provided will this information from 3rd Parties.

It is sometimes not a great idea to use packaged web apps such as WordPress provided with a hosting package. It is often much less hassle in the long run to do a manual install. This may look daunting to anyone who has not set up a database or used ftp previously, but it is worth the effort.

As long as the hosting package meets the minimum requirements you can install using the instructions at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress

If BMW advertised run-flat tyres and you later found out they burst, leaving you at the side of the road.
Would you, when ringing BMW customer service, accept advice to “get a jack out and change the wheel”?
Or would you argue that this functionality was one of the reasons you made your purchase? and that having it work as promised is a reasonable expectation?

Secondly, If you’re reading this Nerys, I’ve called the number you gave me and i’m still awaiting someone to answer the call after 42 minutes on hold.

I have used 123reg for years with no real issues but the experience i’ve had over the last 2 days with customer service has been nothing short of appaling.

[Stop bumping! If it’s that urgent, consider hiring someone.]

    Hello,

If you have not spoken to anyone yet, please supply me with a domain name so I can trace your account, and I will arrange for a member of the team to call you.

    Nerys
