WordPress.com-style Follow Button?

    I have no issue, rather a question:

    I noticed that within the stats section there are two types of followers: wordpress.com- and e-mail-followers.

    Does that mean that for logged in WordPress.com-users a follow button shows in the admin-bar?

    I made a test-account to see, but no admin-bar showed while I was logged in to my wordpress.com-test-account.

    How are these wordpress.com-users following me?

    Edit: is there any way to make a custom follow-button? Which we could put in our social media widgets? If so, what would the link look like?
